Banana sent via US Postal

OK,
I once read that you could send an actual, unwrapped banana in the mail. It needs a stamp and an address on it and it will arrive at the destination as is. The purpose of this thread is to find out if anyone has read this, and if anyone can verify if this is true. I am hoping I can pull this off with a carrot, as I need tosend an unpackaged carrot in the mail.
