Baldness Drug May Prevent Cancer

this is one of the most interesting threads ever!

good points and theories all over the place.

A few things...

First, finasteride has been used for years for the treatment of BPH, with the hope, by doctors, that it would reduce incidence of prostate cancer. As I understand, this was its PRIMARY use before it caught on for it's therapeutic hair benefits. I find it amusing that all the headlines read "Baldness Drug," etc., etc.

Second, being a simple 5-AR inhibitor, I don't see how it could interfere with test production. I certainly don't see how it would interfere with the body's utilization of exogenous testosterone.

needsize, link the thread to which you are referring.

As far as your personal experience, many have used it on and off cycle and found that it didn't interfere. I believe Huck is one who uses it with success while cycling.

I have no idea where to find the link to the original thread is as once I read a post, I file it away in my head, and never worry about having to prove what I read to anyone else.

It says right in the insert that comes with it that a possible side effect is a decrease in libido. Myself, I had already finished post cycle therapy and had my sex drive back, before I started the finasteride. Within a few weeks, my sex drive almost completely disappeared and I had a hell of a time getting it up. I stayed on as my next cycle had a really heavy dose of test, and I was worried about my prostate. 6 weeks into the cycle, I was getting frustrated as my gains sucked. After looking closely at everything I was doing, I figured it might be the finasteride, so I dropped it. Thats when I started to make gains on my cycle, which is even more odd as week 6-7 is when my gains typically stop.

I have absolutely no doubt in my mind what effects the finasteride had in my body, as a result I have a few bottles still sitting here that I wont even touch

Of course. The reduction of DHT itself corresponds with a reduction in libido. In a few finasteride users, this side effect is dramatic. Like any other drug, their are those who simply do not tolerate it well. However, I have read literature that cites not only a reduction in DHT, but a corresponding increase in circulating testosterone among finasteride users.

I think finasteride, in regard to testosterone cycles, should only be used to keep DHT levels from rising above normal. Also, I believe their is sound reason to discontinue finasteride durring HTPA recovery.

I've tried searching for the link you cite. If you don't mind, see if you can find it. I'd like to hear what it has to say. At this time, however, I think it is premature to say that the drug inhibits testoterone production and/or negates testosterone's effect on the body.

Finasteride had absolutely no effects on my gains, but I did notice a slight drop in libido. My ability to perform has not changed a bit, but I think about sex less often....which is sort of a good thing.
I have been using 2.5mg for 3 months. Finasteride does increase free test levels to some degree (about 5-15% in normal males)

Where to begin?

As for the study in question:
They found many more incidences of cancer than would normally be expected in the general population because of the rigorous testing (blood tests as well as prostate boipsies) that was performed on all patients. rostate cancer is probably one of the most survivable cancers and several studies have asserted that those treated for prostate cancer had an overall worse survival rate than those who were untreated. In this case, finasteride reduced the overall incidence of tumors, but increased the liklihood of developing and aggressive tumor (very bad). The tumors that finasteride prevented were small tumors that probably would not have been of consequence in everyday life.

Now, for those who take anabolic steroids, finasteride can be a life saver. If you take steroids that are converted by 5 alpha reductase into more potent metabolites (testosterone to DHT is the biggie) then finasteride could help prevent serious prostate problems in the future. Finasteride will lower libido, but this has nothing to do with gains, period. DHT is deactivated in skeletal muscle by the enzyme 3 alpha hydroxysteroid dehyrogenase (forming androstanedione), so the loss of DHT should have no negatie impact on skeletal muscle hypertrophy (if you have very high DHT levels, then one could exceed the capacity of 3 alpha hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and in this case, one would notice a decrease in gains -- but, your prostate at these levels would probably be the size of a grapefruit). Even thoug hi stated that prostate cancer is very survivable and has a lower incidence than was found in this study, high levels of androgens will increase the liklihood of BPH, prostate cancer and a negative outcome if cancer develops.
