Balancing Gain/Losses

Well I have a pretty interesting predicament. Due to an injury, I was off my feet all summer and I have put on 25-30 pounds. And I will begin practices for football again in about 4 months.

I need to lose the 30 pounds I put on to get back into peak shape and I would still like to keep my muscle gains.

I'm leaning towards cutting all the fat quickly for I can continue sport specific workouts and training and then continue with a hard workout plan. But I'm not sure because I am not the most knowledgeable about the science of the body.

So, basically, what would be the best route to take? Cut all the fat quickly and continue normal training. Train normal now and cut right before the season. Or can I train decently while cutting weight decently?

Thanks.

Lyle McDonald's Ultimate Diet 2.0 seems to get pretty high marks as a fast way to drop bodyfat. I've never tried it, but Lyle has his own forums where you can get plenty of info on it. After doing that you'd still have a couple months to prepare for the season.
