Background Checks

What is it that they look for aside from the obvious? Felonys and misdemeanors are a given, but I know they check credit as well. What do they look for on that? Reason I ask is , I just got divorced and my credit is absolutely fucked. Bad. Embarrassingly bad. Whatever you know will help. Thanks in advance.

You arent going to like it, but they look at it to determine how responsible and dependable an individual you are.

It definitely won't count in your favor, so you may wish to prepare in advance an explanation of the derogatories, and hand it in with your application. At least that way they have something to balance what the report will evidence.

May also help to get an advance copy of your report so you'll know exactly what they'll be looking at as well. No point for example blaming it all on the divorce if the credit problems preceed that time frame. A dumb explanation is worse than none at all/

depends on who is doing the check and what they're checking. a criminal background check is completely independent of a credit check.

I am in finance ironically, so I'm pretty sure the credit would come up. The explanation would be perfectly valid. Savings wiped out from divorce and penalties, over 50% pay cut to keep my job, inheriting the ex's debt, etc. Nothing was an issue until a few months ago. I was wondering if large companies review these on a case by case basis or if it doesn't fit, you're fucked.

That was my thought. My inital interview went well, actually applying is the next step. The RVP wants me there, I just don't know how this can change things. I never had a ding, over 30% of the available balance, nothing until this shit started, now I'm just treading water. I could have it fixed in a few months with this new job, but "if....then" isn't what I'd want to hear if I was hiring someone.

The usually check to see if you have ever attended an AAP Pool party
if you are going to work with children..

Don't sweat it too much. They'll look at the entire history. Shit happens to everyone, especially for a job, they are more interested in determining character. A little poor but consistently bad credit would probably way more against you than something that could be tied to an aberrant cause, like medical illness or a divorce. People don't go through that every day, and when it happens, people are more understanding than if the explanattion is you just can't properly manage your finances.

Soooo what your saying is, I have a chance.

Im Michigan they are two different checks. i have had a criminal backgound check done a couple times based on my jobs...and no credit history was reported

more importantly, the check is to know everything about you...that way lets say you are in a position where someone tries to blackmail you for info that you have access to...and threaten to uncover this news to the public.. which could cause you to lose your job or embarass the govt....the govt already knows about this particular thing about your past in their background investigation...

ie...you used to smoke pot all the time in college...then go on being in some top secret job for the NSA breaking codes....someone knows what you used to do in the past and say, give me $10,000 or i'll let the news out that you were a big pothead in college... well if you already noted that in your background investigation...can't really blackmail you .....

alot of times,
