best thing to do is hit f8 once you boot up till the options appear and select command prompt. Then type scanreg restore or maybe just scanreg and select a date to back the registry up from.

BURNING INSIDE SAID THE BEST/QUICKEST OPION. TELL HIM TO LOOK FOR HIS MEMORY RESTORE FUNCTION. SELECT A DATE TO RESTORE BACK TO AND IT SHOULD FIX ITSELF. IF HE GOT A VIRUS THAT AFFECTS EVEN THAT FILE HE IS SCREWED THOUGH. BUT I DOUBT A VIRUS IS AFFECTING THAT FILE IF HE CAN BOOT UP JUST NOT OPEN A BROWSWER.
WORKS FOR ME WHEN I HAVE A PROBLEM. THOUGH SINCE I GOT THIS COMP (DELL) A YEAR AGO, I HAVENT HAD TO USE IT. I USED IT QUITE FREQUENTLY ON MY GATEWAY THOUGH.

im writing this from the library computer, mine is still screwed. the IE6 download thing saint sent me didn't help anything. I ran & installed it but it still doesnt' work.
What happened is this. My mouse was messed up so i downloaded some drivers. i think i did that 2 times. Could that have messed it up, downloading the same set of drivers repeadaely? Before i downloaded drivers about 3x the browsers would still open up.
i can't check my email on the library computer, so you'll have to post or send a pm if you have info.
i'll probably have to wait for my brother to come up here with my windows XP disk. then i can reinstall everything. this computer sucks. I'm getting a newer hard drive & reinstalling everything.

thats alright its not your fault.
i'm guessing this happened because i kept re-downloading drivers for my microsoft intellimouse from the microsoft homepage (i read in help that you should redownload them if you're having mouse problems, so i did and nothing happened. so i tried it again (perhaps that was a bad idea)). before that my browsers opened up.

did you try downloading another browser....opera perhaps? I'd give that a try and see if it works...at least you could still use the web that way.

i tried burning insides idea. It said 'safe mode with command prompt' so i went into that when i rebooted. However, the commands 'scanreg' 'scanreg restore' scanreg & scanreg restore. None of them was considered a legitimate command. i'm on windows XP.
I don't think i can download a new browser as i can't open that hyperlink. Maybe someone can send it to me via AIM or something. that or netscape. My AIM handle is iprefermsn1979.

this may have been said already, but how about uninstalling the mouse and rebooting the computer and seeing if the computer automatically detects the mouse. then try launching explorer. maybe fixing the mouse will fix the browser. But I still think your mouse is dirty too.

Hey man XP comes with a system restore function. Just go to the system tools folder under accessories and select system restore. From there you can select a date prior to your mishap. Click next a couple times and it'll will ptu your computer back to the date you picked. It'll reboota dn you should be all set

If it's a setup or exe file then yea you could burn it onto a cd.

i did system restore, set it for january 7th. what happened is this, when the comp came back on, my mouse was frozen. i restarted it and nothing, i couldn't move it. Luckily my brother has the same mouse i do, so i switched with his and for some reason it works now (it didn't change anything when i switched them yesterday). IE is opening now. The mouse seems to work on his computer for some reason.
