ata schools for my son?

we are looking into karate for our 9 year old son. ata is a big place so i figured maybe you guys have heard of them. right now we arent to concerned about the type of training or how good he would get in sparing. our concern is in his behavioral issues. we want to get him into a program that will help us boost his feeling of self worth. and get him thinking positive. and of course the self disipline. karate is one of several ideas we have. is this school any good? does any one know of a better school in the cecil county maryland area? thanks in advance

i dont know that school but I have been teaching kids for 21 years non stop. just let your kid try some classes and if he/you like it then go for it. try classes at 2 or 3 dojos. good luck

I taught at an ATA school....they tend to almost "specialize" in dealing with difficult kids..hyper, don't follow rules. etc. they seem to have well trained and caring instructors that can set firm limits without bullying.

that sounds perfect. thank you

get him in a bjj school. i think it is a lot funner for kids to get to wrestle with each other as opposed to punching the air.

It was just a matter of time before somebody chimed in with this.
Sadly it is a bullshit post.

Karate is not punching the air. From 1984 we have always taught strangulations, chokes, joint locks and ground fighting, weapons, pressure point control tactics, real life self defense as well as kicking punching striking blocking kata and kumite.

each dojo is DIFFERENT! old style Karate from its birthplace of Okinawa has always had throwing and ground work as well as "what people think karate is"

You have to GO TO THE DOJO and try some classes.

Dont listen to anybody who has not trained in the exact dojo you are considering.

Just because they chose a shitty dojo does not mean you are going to as well.

Believe it or not there are also BJJ McDojo in the USA too.

best of luck.

lol @ you...please point us to a kids program that teaches all of this. i don't claim to know all but i doubt it's out there. lets face it...kids want to wrestle. take him to a bjj school and let him do so.

also...if you look at the videos on the ata link that the op posted, you will see that almost everything is punching and kicking the air. i for sure think that getting a kid involved with any type of martial arts program is a good thing, i'm just partial to bjj. i know if i would have found it when i was a kid, i would have stuck with it as opposed to getting bored and dropping out like i did way back then.

not sure what joslin teaching kid's karate has to do with anything but as we know many mma fighters have tma backgrounds. actually here is what he advertises that he teaches :

"With over a decade of experience teaching Martial Arts, Jeff is the rare combination of fighter and instructor. Bring Jeff to your martial arts school and learn the techniques that he has used to climb to the top of the martial arts world.

Disciplines Offered:
Mixed Martial Arts
Boxing / Kickboxing
Submission Wrestling (no-gi)
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (with gi)"

don't get all upset man. i'm not putting down karate. i just happen to think that bjj is a much better choice for a 9 year old boy. if you disagree then that is cool and i respect that. if we are going to argue effective fighting styles then that is a different world period that i'm sure 9 year olds aren't too concerned with.

Actually as a student of BJJ, Tae Kwon Do Karate and boxing I have to say that overall BJJ is quite solid. The best bet in terms of self defense is MMA but I also attend a BJJ school with MANY young kids and the teacher does quite well with them. they seem to enjoy it because it is more interactive then karate etc. they get to "wrestle" around and rough house of sorts, which is natural to a kid. It is not kicking pads, forms, etc. It is more physically exhausting as well.

best of luck.

AND YES McDojos of any form exist all over the wordl! Heavy-duty is right you need to observe and ask questions. Just like anything there are fakes and phonies. Many people want to make money and there is a market for this with unruly children and the rise of the UFC etc. I know so many black belts that have gotten the shit kicked out of them in a fight at the mall.....not cool for them to be fighting and even more not cool to take a beating by a teenager with slurpy. or BEER muscles if in a bar.

well here is an update. all 4 of our kids have been in ata for the last 4-5 months (since i posted). here are my thoughts. first ill state the good:

all 4 of them are improving in multiple areas (the real reason we inrolled them). our 9 year old is not stealing, lashing out, or refusing to do school work (most of the time). our 5 year old is cleaning her room and things like that the first time we tell her to, our 14 year old is being more considerate if his younger brother who looks up to him, and our 15 year old is becoming less shy and showing more concern for what goes on in his life and with his family. as a whole our family is growing stronger. this is priceless thanks to josh hahurst and ata maryland. i am verry happy

now my other view.

they go above and beyond to reach into your wallet. top dollar for everything. and as mentioned everyone promotes every 2 months. there are plenty of blackbelts and even a couple that teach that look like my kids did in their first couple months doing their moves. if you dont practice and make yourself good at it you wont be. they just want to be paid.

they also have a mma program tought by their chief instructor and owner mr hahurst. who i think brings a solid self defence training to this program. they learn standing and ground fighting between these 2 classes. this is where the fighting ability comes from. mr hahurst is a 4th digree and is only in his early to mid 20's however he knows his shit. i had the oportunity to hold a bag for this skinny 150lb guy 1 day while he was punching it verry quickly and driving me across the floor. i am almost double his weight. he also knocks people across the room with his kicks and never seems to lose. he just won some titles at worlds. on top of all of that he really cares about the kids and reaches out to them. he personally makes every effort to help them succeed. this is not all to kiss his ass its more to say that if mr hahurst was not there i probably would not be happy with this school and want out. i think a good teacher and a student that really wants to learn is what is needed for success. any lazy blob can get a black belt at ata by showing up and doing a couple half ass moves. but the ones who put the effort in will be crippling the sorry ass of whom ever makes them defend themselves. i see it in my older boys already as they spar each other.

thanks all for the replies

(1)The "worlds" he was in was not the real worlds. There is not worlds every year.
(2)4th Dan/Degree is too high for mid 20's unless he himslef also started at age 6.
(3) You weigh 300 Lbs?.
(4) It is VERY easy to impress parents, I know because I have owned my own club for 20 years :)
(5) main thing is that you and the kids like it and you're both happy.

keep kickin.

it was ata worlds in vegas
again i agree ata does promote fast and for money he was 10 or younger when he started i dont know the age
i weigh over 270lbs
i watched videos of his sparring in comp where he sends people flying after toying with them controlling the whole match never letting them score a point
exactly, we are getting exactly what we went there for.

again i know my post sounds like im kissing ass or something but its really not like that. im just stating the good with the bad is all. i dont want to say ata is great because i think ata sucks but i think my kids chief instructor is great and raises the quality of instruction on multiple levels.

i completely understand what you are saying and i for the most part agree. there are 4 other instructors there that i think completely suck. they try but i dont think they should be running classes.
