Pull back slightly on the syringe after fully inserting but before injecting any gear into the muscle. Look for little bubbles of blood. If you see em, pull out and inject somewhere else. Why? You want to make sure your aren't going to inject into a vein, as this is not a fun experience.

well it is flicking the back of the syringe to make sure no blood comes into the syringe after you have fully plunged the nedle into the muscle. this is so you know you are sitting in a vein. btw,u do not need to pull back on the syringe, just flick it, if you are in a vein the blood will flow very easily into the syringe do to pressure.

I'm sure I've gone right through a vein before but other than that have never had a problem. Don't get me wrong I've hit spots before that hurt like a mother, not sure if its a nerve or vein but I just pull out slightly and redirect and it seems to work every time. Its alot easier to do intramuscular injections than giving blood. Ever get those dufus nurses that stab you a million times even though you they have a ton of veins popping out of your arm???

you definatley know you are in a vein when you pull back on the syringe and there is no back pressure and just from a slight tug on the plunger you pull about 1.5 ccs of blood into the syringe
