Ashcroft tour to plug terror bill

WASHINGTON - Attorney General John Ashcroft is hitting the road to rally support for the Victory Act, which would further expand his powers to go after Al Qaeda and narcoterrorists, the Daily News has learned.

Ashcroft will starting pushing the Vital Interdiction of Criminal Terrorist Organizations Act later this month in a 10-day, 20-state Victory tour that includes a stop in New York.

But the nation's top cop is facing tough opposition from critics on both the right and left, who fear Ashcroft is eroding civil rights.

The Justice Department's reach was vastly increased by Congress after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks with the Patriot Act.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) is expected to introduce the Victory Act next month. If passed, the feds would be allowed to:

# Clamp down on Arab hawala transactions, where cash exchanged in an honor system has been funneled to terrorists.

# Get business records without a court order in terrorism probes and delay notification.

# Track wireless communications with a roving warrant.

# Increase sentences for drug kingpins to 40 years in prison and $4 million in fines.

i guess everyone who uses an illegal drug is now considered a 'narcoterrorist'.

aids patients, people with cancer, and those living at hospices look out, for you might now be considered a 'narcoterrorist'.

i will give ashcroft some credit for being so sly and smooth about the names he uses for what he wants done. 'patriot' act and 'victory' act, no politician is going to vote against something with a name like that, kinda like if had a bill to legalize gang rape and called it 'the civil rights act of 2003', you can bet your ass it would pass, because stupid fucking politicians would be hesistant to vote against it just because of the name.

yup I read that since drug dealers are considered terrorists, and terrorists are considered armed combatants, they can be placed in military prison, withheld legal council, and can be kept out of contact from family memembers.

Dooooooooooooooomed!!

At least Congress is starting to flush the Patriot Act.
I'm not so sure.

The problem is not America, it is this administration. In a year, America will reach a Y in the river that forever stamps her destiny.

Remember that this country has always enjoyed a great deal of luck, why would we suddenly run out?

The only viable candidate that could take Bush out and bring back the old glory of the US is Dean and as poink has pointed out, Dean has an uphill battle against the right and the Clintons.

because most of america is hooked on the hero drug worse than heroin. most americans are so far removed from poverty and suffering they live in a world dominated by names, labels and emotions.

the farther we get away from 1776, the more patheticly ignorant we become.

Why Dean? (Don't get me wrong, I'm a big supporter. Just curious as to what makes him so special)
