MANCHESTER – A long-time Central High School football coach says he was assaulted by a bouncer at the Derryfield Restaurant after a charity golf tournament.
Jim Schubert, who retired last year from the Little Green, told police he was injured June 16 by a bouncer who grabbed him by the shoulders and dragged him out of the restaurant.
Lt. Jim Stankiewicz said police were investigating details of Schubert's complaint, which was made the night of the incident. Authorities intend to speak to the restaurant's general manager, he said.
In a report to police, Schubert said he had consumed six or eight beers on the deck following the tournament and dinner. Schubert said the bouncer had no reason to eject him.
Last night, Bill LaBerge, a co-owner of the Derryfield, said he was unfamiliar with details of Schubert's allegations.
"I didn't know he had filed a complaint," LaBerge said. "I heard something happened, but I don't know if he got pulled out or not."
The incident occurred after the Panteli-Kotrotsios Memorial Golf Tournament, a charity event hosted by Schubert's brother, Manchester Wolves managing partner Steve Schubert.
Steve Schubert, who played for the NFL's Chicago Bears and New England Patriots, did not return a phone call last night.
Jim Schubert, a 1966 Central High graduate, wouldn't comment, referring questions to his attorney, Mark Abramson.
In 16 seasons with Manchester Central, Schubert is credited with building a perennial state power. He guided the team to six state Division I championships and a record six-straight championship game appearances.
