Artificial Insulin Spike?

Hopefully this is the correct section to post this in. Anyway...

I am a 21 year old bodybuilder with Insulin Dependent Diabetes. I have had diabetes since I was 9 years old, and have been bodybuilding since I was 15. Having done a lot of research about bodybuilding over the past several years, it is common knowledge (in the bodybuilding scene) that a normal person should consume some fast acting (High GI) carbs AFTER working out, such as white bread, bananas, dextrose etc. This is obviously in order for the body to release insulin (called an "insulin spike") which in turn helps deliver nutrients such as protein etc to your muscles to help aid in repair/recovery.

The problem is, as I'm a type 1 diabetic my pancreas does NOT produce insulin, therefore I most likely miss out on this "insulin spike". Do you feel it would be a good idea to inject a small amount of fast acting insulin straight after working out so that I can get an "artificial" insulin spike which works in the same way as a normal person's body?

It may not be allowed to advise people of taking extra insulin, and I appreciate that although I have my diabetes under excellent control & feel I can cope with adding a small amount of insulin to my body straight after working out, in order to get this so called insulin spike everybody is talking about in the bodybuilding community.

If it works, I feel it would massively help me in terms of seeing better gains/changes in my body etc.

I'll wait to hear from somebody regarding this, thanks a lot!

this is perfect for me to answer as im also type one diabetic the insulin injections that you take everyday act like a massive insulin spike esp with fast acting insulin because it hits the blood stream within 5 mins with the basic fast acting insulin such as nolvalog thats why you go hypo if you dont eat enough so your not missing out believe me you can turn your insulin into the ultimate anabolic now im not a doctor and can not advise you to change your regimne with out consulting your endocrinologist first! SEE YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE CHANGEING ANY OF YOUR DOSEAGES OR ANY OTHER MEDICATIONS! my personal experience when im bulking and training hard my fast acting insulin units goes from around 35 units per day to almost 75 units wow thats alot of carbs and alot of insulin! which equals alot of gains and muscle! remember it can cause major hypoglycemia if you OD on insulin so talk with you doctor and be smart with you diabetes stay healthy and defeat the complications of this disease just like im trying to do! best of luck !

I'm glad somebody with the same issues was able to answer this question.

Thank you very much ^^

I'm on Actrapid (Fast Acting) & Insulatard (Slow Acting) at the moment. I was thinking of taking maybe 2-4 units of Actrapid PWO, but I'm not sure if this will be enough for a decent insulin spike.

what is your carb to unit ratio ie I take 1 unit for 15 carbs I often take a basic ten unit bolus after WO and eat 150 carbs consisting of half low glycemic half high glycemic and it works for me
3 units to me is for the milk i drink so that would not be enough to suit my need i also check my blood glucose prior to this to make sure im in an appropraite range because exercise often makes me hypo and you dont wanna take insulin if your already low you know that im sure!

disclaimer :SEE YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE CHANGEING ANY OF YOUR DOSEAGES OR ANY OTHER MEDICATIONS! Do not take advise as fact or even a reasonable idea for actual use! This is for entertainment only!

Is that a clean or dirty bulk? And how much fat (if any) do you end up gaining with that much insulin?
