Army Ranger thread

frorider6

New member
I know there's a lot of military guys on here so I wanted to start a thread dedicated to the Army Rangers (and possibly all special forces).

I should know within the week if I've been accepted to OCS. I definetly want to get into Ranger School too. But what is involved in being an officer and a Ranger? What is Ranger School like? How hard is it to get in? Once a Ranger, how much time is spent deployed? What is a typical day back at home like for a Ranger?

Related thread from a guy in Airborne School with some really cool posts.
Hello From Airborne School

Most, if not all Ranger Officers must be a First Lt. but have prior service as an NCO....As for Ranger School, the only thing I can say is Hungry, Tired, bugs, or cold depending on the time of year you go....

You are deployed or in training quite alot during the year, more in the field than in the barracks....If you are married, it's very hard on the realtionship...

Now I'd like you guys to explain the difference between the Green Berets, the Ranger, Delta Force.......... and between the Navy Seals and the DEVGRU. I mean Who's the Best. Which one is harder to get in and what are their specific task.

Thanks.

Well shit. I hope that's not true. I have prior service but it was Air Force and I was only an E4.

Just found this information. Excerpts...

Officers: How to Join the Rangers

The 75th Ranger Regiment is a flexible, highly-trained, and rapidly-deployable light infantry force with specialized skills that enables it to be employed against a variety of conventional and special operations targets. This elite unit is an ALO-1, Personnel Priority Group-1 unit committed to excellence in combat performance. All members of the 75th Ranger Regiment are volunteers who must pass a stringent selection and assessment program before being assigned. The 75th Ranger Regiment offers unprecedented opportunities for professional growth and development.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR ASSIGNMENT?

LIEUTENANTS :

OFFICER BASIC COURSE GRADUATE
SUCCESSFUL TROOP EXPERIENCE
AIRBORNE QUALIFIED
ALL INFANTRY OFFICERS RANGER QUALIFIED

LIEUTENANT & WARRANT OFFICER POSITIONS:
INFANTRY

LT
Rifle Platoon Leader
Mortar Platoon Leader
Company XO
Support Platoon Leader
RRD XO

WHEN TO APPLY?

** The very earliest the Regiment can get an officer PCSd is 18 months time-on-station. This is applicable for all assignments except short tours. Some very good officers have not been selected, because they waited too long to submit a packet. Send it early.

LIEUTENANTS:

Normal Tour: Apply when you have 8 months time-on-station
Short Tour: Apply when you have 6 months time-on-station

Seems my best bet is to go Infantry.

Green Berets are US Army Special Forces, they are the one that will do contact with the locals and train them fot subversive war yadda yadda.

Rangers: Are the Elite Parachutist and are shock infantry.

Delta Forces are a unit from the Green Beret, but they are specialized in Counter Terrorism and in operation similar to UK SAS.

Navy Seals: Are sailors that got bored of cleaning ships aboard USS Nowhere and they are Hyped a bit too much: They are the one responsible for seaborne ops(in theory)

Devgru is the Delta of the Seals.

In my humble opinion the US has too much Spec Ops, and they created a new one again YEAH

fun to see what will happen if the right hand will know what the left does.

Rangers are like elite army infantry. Airborne, gather intel, recon. They technically aren't consided special forces. Generally a tougher and smarter breed of soldier.

Green Berets are the Army's special forces. I think they still use 12 man teams. Each man specializes in something, but all are cross-trained. They choose which region of the globe to train for, I think there's 5 different areas to choose from. They do covert ops behind the enemy lines. A lot of which has to do with training guerilla forces to overthrow the local governments and what not. They're also considered a force multiplier, meaning a team of 12 Green Berets is like having 50 regular soldiers, capability wise.

Seals are the Navy's special forces, capable of attacking by Sea Air and Land (SEAL). The first iteration of these men were the frogmen specializing in underwater demolition and stuff of that nature.

The Marines have Force Recon for their special forces units. I'm least familiar with this group.

They all do covert missions and special ops.

Delta Force is a whole different ballgame. They are hand picked and mainly deal with counterterrorist/CIA stuff. They are as elite a group as you're going to get. They can't even acknowledge the fact they are in Delta Force, which for years never officially "existed". Highly trained for combat (especially urban) and highly intelligent.

I'm not even going to touch which groups are the hardest to get into training wise, but Delta is definately the hardest to get in overall. In fact most people have no idea they have even been started on the screening process to join Delta, untill quite some time into it.

This all based on what I have read in various books, I've never been in the service. So take it as you will.

They are all the best at what specific tasks they train in....as for "D" Boys, they are generally looking for an educated solider who can operate and make sound manuvers under the most diverse conditions....generally you must be at least an E-5 or better on a second enlistment of three years or more...

All have special qualification courses and can infiltrate whether by sea air or land, though the SEALS once again specialize in this type operation....as of right now, there are no Marines units associated with SOCOM or JSOC.
