Are you abit obsessive/compulsive?

Growth&Courage

New member
Like, as you leave your house you would double check your door handle by twisting it once or twice (or more) to ensure that it is 100% locked.
Like, as you enter in your house at night time to turn you head backwards and check that no one was following you within a few strolls from you?
Like, when you dropped your wallet down; to ensure that no important cards, money or significant items were accidently left unpicked on the ground you reassessed exactly what you have in your wallet starting from credit cards through to the total sum of money?

Please share some of your obsessive/compulsive behaviors that are nothing extreme of and yet you do them regularly. (excluding sex guys)

For me with door handles and wallet.

I have to go to the Gym every fucking day... and the days I don't go, I feel really bad about it... doesn't get much more worse than that...

I have A LOT although I trick myself into believing I'm normal, I forget what I did right after I do it until I'm in the situation again. Like I can't even remember what they are right now but I know I have them. damn.

When I arrive home, I stand in the hallway and quickly scan my apartment (I live in a studio, so this is easy) for anything that is out of place. I usually can tell within 30 seconds if someone (i.e., maintenance) was in my place.

OMG

I'm totally like that too.
I had an apt in Sag Harbor where the Landlord used to come in all the time and I always knew so I start to set booby traps for her. LOL
I drove her to admit to coming into the apt. MUHAHHAHA

I think it's good to be aware of your surroundings at all times.

I used to leave my desk and binders at my last job in just a certain way to see if the bosses would go through anything when I left or when I was on vacation.

I do the same thing to my cube. If someone took a post-it the night before, I will know when I arrive the next day.

(It may be a New York thing.)

Ok Good, at least we're not alone.

Yeah...I'm a clean freak, I feel "off" if my routine is messed up for the day. I always think I leave things plugged in once I leave my place. :worried:

I dont think these things are obsessive compulsive.,

They are pretty normal human behavior. Every one is different.

OCD is like someone scrubbing down their entire house with bleach like 3 times a week.

I have my whole alarm thing where I set 4 alarms at nite and check them to make sure they are still on time to wait me up a

lso I chew the same piece of gum all day long... 8 - 12 hours of the same piece of gum

O fuck where to start.

When I change lanes I use my turn signal five times.
I must check every door I close 2 times to see if it is locked.
I have to fix things that are out of place.
I check probably 1000x per day to make sure I have my keys, wallet, phone, etc. (in fact I just did)
I eat my food in the same order every time (Nuggets-fries-burger) when I eat fast food.
I push down on the papertowel dispensor handle 5 times when in a public restroom, or grap three sheets it is a sheet dispensor.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Somethings I don't mind some drive me nuts, but you just have to learn to live with OCD.

I'm a bit weird about the counter around the sink. No water drops are allowed to stay on there, I wash my hands and then have a hand-towel for drying the counter and the taps.

I do it every single time.

I don't lose my mind or anything if my guests leave water there, just every time I do, I have to dry it.

And the shoes on the mat by the door have to be lined up nicely.

Pretty sure Im the biggest freak on this one....

I've locked the door, went down to my car and started it, only to go all the way back to the door to make 'sure' I remembered. Sometimes doing this twice lol.

Everything in my room has its place from the pillow layout on my bed to the placement of all my muscle supps in alphabetical order and labels faced straight out.

Also, if I leave to go anywhere my place has to be spotless and in order or else I don't feel very comfortable.

I gotta kick these habits!!

I used to have this pretty bad about 5-8 yrs ago. Probably during a time i was depressed. I would get upo from my bed 3-4 times afterlaying down to go to sleep, just to check and make sure that the doors were locked and shut all the way, and also that the pilot lights on the stove were lit.

Now I dont have this problem quite so much. SOmetimes I think (after i leave the house) that i may have left the water running and i imagine a flood. BUt its never been enough to make me turn around and go check, LOL

I think these thoughts can be caused by stressful times in ones life.

Scots - yeah i check for my cell phone constantly. ive pulled off the side of teh road numerous times to make sure it was in my purse. im terrified of not having it when i leave home.

I've gone back home from work to check my door to make sure it's locked.

Smurfy- I really don't use it that much or even like having it, but if I think I've lost the phone I go into a near panic attack. Stupid thing can be off and I still need to know where it is.LOL

In high school I used to double check the lock on my locker to make sure I locked it.

My sisters have these halogen lamps in their rooms and in HS I was always worried about them leaving the on all the time and starting a fire because they NEVER turn their lights off, so I used to double check every day before I left the house. I've since stopped worrying about this; not living at home for 8 months I stopped worrying about it.

I will sometimes go back and make sure I've locked my door.

Before I had a flip phone I used to press the 'end' button repeatedly to make sure I hadn't accidentally called someone/not hung up properly

Shit, I never knew that this many people are living with OCD to a more or less extent...call it OCD or whatever, they are little repetitive actions that sometimes seem illogical and unnecessary yet we do them as part of our lives.

They say that compulsive actions have psychoanalytic roots...

Most of the time I leave my room, an object or an item will be placed strategically on the floor overlapping certain objects. Should the positioning of the object even be moved to the slightest different angle- I will know that an unauthorized person has access my property.

I used to be. Real bad... Like check to make sure I had my car keys 3 times before I closed the car door.
Not anymore...

not sure about OCD but i have weird little rituals, especially with food

I always take as much food as I plan on eating, and I WILL eat all of it

i go iNSANE when somebody puts food on my plate, or when somebody doesn't stop giving me food after I say when. i didn't commit to that food! how dare you try to pawn it off on me!

oh and i always eat one type of food at a time and never mix my food. I start with the healthiest thing on the plate, move on to the next healthiest etc until i'm done. I only realized last week that i do this, but apparently i've been doing it for years

weird, huh

I used to do this one a lot & still catch myself doing it sometimes: If I get up to walk upstairs into the bedroom, I have to take an even number of steps before crossing the threshold into the bedroom.....if I would be on the, say, 13th step, I'd do a little hop to get in an extra step......

When walking out on the street, if I step on a manhole with 1 foot, I have to step on it again, so I'd have stepped on it twice or step on the next manhole with the other foot, so I'd have an even number.....

I CAN'T stand the DBs at the gym being not lined up in pairs & will rearrange them every time I'm there. The sheets on my bed can't be messed up when I go to sleep.

I hate to go to the Gym every fucking day... and the days I don't go, I feel really bad about it.

I have a thing about dirty dishes, they have to be washed & dried just so. If the dishwasher is used, they have to be arranged perfectly to get every possible scrap of food.

Hey, touch my office toys and someone is gonna lose a finger or two.

You mean those stress relieving ones wrapped in a paper bag, hidden in the bottom right side drawer underneath the operating manual for the printer you got rid of 5 yrs ago? :qt:

Isn't it interesting, when you do this, it also goes from worst to best tasting?

.
I used to do this & many others, like pedal rotations on a bike, steps on a sidewalk tile, etc. I also used to make funny noises in my throat, ticks, clicking, grunts etc. Always had to be in the same transition rotation, & the same number of each. If I screwed up I'd have to start over.
I don't know why, or what happened, but I stopped in my early teens & never started again.

I still catch myself doing it on occasion & when I do, I'll purposely take an odd # of steps to show myself nothing bad will happen.....

I wouldn't say I'm obsessive compulsive; I've gotten over little habits I mentioned in my post. But I probably do have other slightly obsessive compulsive habits that I'm forgetting LOL

lol

We must be twins or something. I do the same thing with the water. Even when I'm at someone else's home I must clean the water droplets off the counter/faucet.

Same with the shoes at the front mat. Must be arranged neatly. I'm also anal about not stepping onto the mat when I take off my shoes.

I had OCD like 4 years ago. i did really stupid things, like which made feel better after i did them like, after each meal i had i would do 100 sit ups. so i was doing 400 sit ups aday, thats not including my workouts . i did other things too.. its a big shiter, cause it can come back and you wouldnt even know about it.

Welcome to the club.......I havent missed a dayin the gym (at least for cardio and abs) in years..........if I don't go, I can't eat nearly as much. I also have to train at night, so I can eat my favorite meal of the day before bed and not feel guilty.

My preworkout meal, I have to leave at least a tiny, smidgen of oats in the bowl. Can't eat it all.

I have eaten the exact same foods, the exact same times, for years..........

I cross myself 5 times before I eat. I pray on one knee everynight before bed then cross myself 5 times.

Yes, Im a sick fer.........

Wouldn't want a relapse :worried: eh? LOL
Here's some K for being almost as weird as I am.

Yeah, really -- it can really take over....

Another sign of having OCD (other than the rituals) is to be extremely organized in some areas & a mess in others, a pack rat or clutter-hound & a tendency to hoard things ----> Me!! LOL

Then I'll watch an episode of Clean Sweep & throw out a bunch of crap!!

I honestly think most people who are seriously into fitness, diet and overall health tend to have symptoms of OCD. This has been recently coined as "Body Dysmorphic Disorder" or in males "Adonis complex". In Boston we have Drs. Pope, Phillips and Olivardia who are experts on this. One of my siblings has spent time in therapy with Dr. Olivardia. His OCD is really bad but it has mitigated a bit with age. I am sure I have a little since it is genetic. I agree with someone who said it manifests itself more when stress is present...
