Are There Serious Dangers To Sleep Deprivation?

OXANDRIN said:

you think the meth had anything to do with them losing their mind

Possibly, but more likely it was the lack of dream state sleep. Studies have shown that if you keep people from dreaming for 48 hours they start to have a psychotic break.

Sofageorge is correct.

There was a guy doing a sponsored radio broadcastathon that meant he stayed awake for two weeks. The guy was irreversibly changed, his wife said he was never the same again.

It's down to the lack of REM sleep. It's the only sleep you need to have. Well, that's not particularly true but REM is the essential one to have.

You need this point of time to let your body process the days events, you can only go without REM for so long before it adversley affects you and stress levels rise, along with blood pressure etc....

There was a case somewhere that a guy didn't sleep for 6 months due to a brain condition... he died, his body just gave up.

Generally though you'll be okay, 5 days is extreme but unless your body isn't sleeping due to disease for example and the brain is working properly you'll go into auto shutdown and have to sleep. Rem sleep usually comes about after 2 hours but if deprived enough and you enter it in 10 minutes.

That's about all I remember from A level Psychology.

I disagree with most of this. First off, the guy on the radio was only awake for something like 72 hours or something like that. And he was hallucinating already, he thought he saw mice in his shoes or some bullshit like that...basically he was dreaming while he was awake.

No one ever stayed awake for 6 months (except in the movies), I believe the world record is like 12 days or so...

The main reason not to do this, IMO, would be the detrimental effect on the immune system, i believe sleep deprivation hinders the ability of the natural killer cells to fight off disease and infection.

Stay awake for 5 days straight, and you will most likely die...have fun trying though...moron.

WTF? of course there are dangers. not sleeping for 5 days straight? i sure would hope that your not out and about while your doing this, i can see something on the news tomorrow "stupid fuck falls asleep at the wheel and kills innocent family in a head on collision"
not too smart man, what is your reason for doing this?

oh man, i remember i had insomnia a few years ago because of anxiety, it was NOT fun. I had hallucinations, bombed all my tests in school, and got into a car accident.

Link to the DJ's details (260 hours):

I think this is the one who lived 6 months although I never looked all the way through, I watched about it on the dicovery channel.
A point of note is that the one who died after 6 months suffered from a brain condition stopping him from falling asleep.

I was going to bring up that same story. I could not remember where I read that so thanks for posting the link. I have chronic insomnia, I have gone 3 days without sleep and I started seeing shit. I could barley function. The only thing I could think about was sleep, why would anyone want to do this? Fucking beyond me, but have fun!

Damn, couldn' they treat the guy with some G or other powerful sleeping agent? I think even with fthat brain disease you can fall asleep with the right medications. 5-HTP is too weak. IMO, the docs just let him die.
