Here is an excerpt from a website on cardiovascular health (http://www.naturalhealthconsult.com/CV.html)

High blood pressure is a risk factor because like any pipe, too much pressure will burst it. Remember the problem with vulnerable cholesterol? Most people who have high blood pressure are deficient in Magnesium, nature's own calcium channel blocker (a class of blood pressure medications.) In fact, most people (80%) are magnesium (Tri-Magnesium) deficient and animals autopsied after a life of Magnesium deficiency show all the signs of cardiovascular disease just like humans. Potassium and Selenium are also important and both are found in the multi-nutrient formulas. Other substances known to lower blood pressure include Hypertenol, Imperial Velvet, Coenzyme Q10, Olive Leaf Extract, Optimind, Cytolog, Grifon Maitake D-Fraction, Royal Break-Stone, Jiaogulan, Ginger, and Garlic with EDTA. Nutritionist Robert Crayon says that Taurine is the best substance for lowering blood pressure. MSM, though it hasn't been studied for this purpose, might be beneficial for its tissue softening effects. Cayenne may also lower blood pressure. Hypertension may also be a manifestation of a subclinical sign of hypothyroidism, usually missed by doctor's who rely on blood tests. See the Wilson's Syndrome pages for information on how to do a more effective thyroid test. Hypothyroidism is critical for another reason. It rapidly accelerates atheroslcerosis by raising LDL cholesterol, lowering HDL and raising triglycerides. Hypertensives should also consume fish oil (Cerebral DHA or Coromega) since they cannot synthesize the essential fats in their body and it will lower triglycerides and VLDL.

Smoking kills with poisons and oxidation. Antioxidants can counteract this somewhat.

Try nicotine. It's proven to cause the growth of new blood vessels and the division of red blood cells. You don't want to just start smoking or chewing though, use nicorette if anything. The reason normal nicotine usage (cigarettes, chew) causes poor blood flow/circulation is because of one or more of the 4,000 chemicals it contains. However, with something like nicotine, it can be beneficial to the division of RBC and promoting new blood vessels.
