are situps really a good ab workout?

Decline sit-ups seem to work good for me. But standard sit-ups REALLY sucked anytime I have ever done them. They were entirely a hip-flexor movement that didnt stress my abs at all. I remember gym class having someone hold your feet down and the only place I could feel them working was my hip-flexors. Hanging knee raises, cable crunches, seated leg tucks, all work much better for my abs. :D:D

i like roman-chair sit-up's. i do them first in my w/o. usually do a total of 300-400 broken down 4-6 sets

Gotta go with MonStar. Remember your abs are not jointed muscles like bis or hams. A lot of the motion in a traditional situp is wasted, being done by your back and hip flexors. Stick to the crunches, leg raises, that kinda stuff.
