are job interviews bullshit

Doesn't make sense, whats the point? Can you really weed out someone who is destructive or constructive on the job just by a job interview? It seems stupid, especially for unskilled labor jobs.

They have done some psych studies showing that most interviews are decided visually in the first minute or so.

In my experience, that has been the case - if you get the interview, then they like you and it is yours to lose by saying stupid shit.

Although for the first time lately I have interviews and feel like I have had to justify why I am there, and it is a wholly unpleasant experience.

I have a thread up about it right now.

yeah i know, your thread made me post this.

BUt take a cashier job. does an interview matter? Can you really tell anything about how someone will function solely by an interview? I seriously doubt it, seems like more of a formality and seems like the person will get hired based on whether the interviewer 'likes' them or not more than anything else.

i think all interviewers are different.....i've been on some interviews where I was the one pretty much controlling it.....and I've been on some where I've been drilled hardcore with very specific questions. I think that an interview will tell you alot about your potential boss, and what kind of place you might be working at.

My interviews for this job have been in stages. The programming part of it, I knew more than any of the guys asking me the questions, so they just stopped it early and moved me to the trading part.

The trader guy saw that I had never worked at a financial institution and that was pretty much the endpoint right there, but it got uglier just for fun on a bad day.

They're only bullshit if you don't get the job.

:)

A lot of the stupid questions they ask may be bullshit, but not the interview itself. They are as much for the potential employee as they are for the employer.

just a cheap excuse to make sure a potential employee doesn't have nuts on his chin or some other grotesque abnormality.

i have a phone interview tomorrow and am disappointed i can't meet the employer in person because in all honesty, my appearance might be my best asset for the job. [/HightIntensity]
