Are Americans really hated all over the world?

Whoa...

There was disbelief...horrified silence..panic as people tried to get in touch with loved ones.. and tears.

No one laughed Jersey.

No offense was intended Seashell. Im sure many had friends and family in the area at the time.

But I would be far more convinmced of Canadian sentiment if I hadnt read ad nauseum the blistering editorials, which apparently are shared by no small number of the readership, outlining how we had it coming as a direct result of American foreing policy. In no so small measure our support of Israel.

It's all well and good for Canada to take a "dont hate us, we didnt support them" attitude towards national security. Frankly in truth it doesnt matter much one way or the other witrh respect to world policy or security. At best your support would have been largely symbolic.

But its encumbent on the US to take a broader view, and face head on the challenges posed by this new paradigm. Canda wishes to pretend that this is some kind of law enforcement task before us, keep your heads in the snow so to speak. Any thinking person recogtnizes this as the state sponsored war bt proxy it is, and will deal with it as such.

It is utter folly to base ones security policies on the hope that "if we just don't piss them off any further, maybe they will go away." You can attempt handing over the jews, and you can hope attempting to hand over th Americans (although we may not go quietly into that good night) but even if your fonest national wishes are realized, they will eventually come for you.

might have to use some less abstract metaphors i think

I got it, I just find it too extreme/not representative of the situation. :)

Why don't they matter? It's easy to say they don't and go about your business, but what specifically? They are becoming a union formidable in size and economic power to our own, and I don't see how you can simply dismiss that as "not mattering." I'm just curious as to why.

More telling sir is that the union was in no small measure motivated by a desire to counter balance the US.

It might also help one to comprehend why they hate us so. The intellectual elite in Europe needed a boogeyman to transcend traditional national sentiment, and the US has become their favorite whipping boy.

"Hate America by forming the EU" is an actual tool of incorporation. Apparently all those dumb farmers outside the major cities werent as keen as their betters about forgetting their national identity and welding their national soveriegnty

i figured you got it, i was covering up ;)

still, people emigrating to america in no way means that they are envious/covetous of america as a whole, merely that they recognise that they have better prospects there.

do you believe that these people become 'americans' and fully assimilate into the society? doubtful. i would bet there are many american citizens who regard themselves as being of a nationality other than american.

australia is the same way. seen it. lived it. up to my eyebrows in people like that. theyre jsut here to work and raise their kids. ask where their heart are, and tell me that they envy the US.

We don't hate America, but we do hate your current president and his administration.

Heck, most Americans hate thier governemnt -- so why is it such a surprise when the rest of the world feels the same way?

Matt hit the nail on the head, we're envied. What are the two reactions people have when they envy something? They either try to become what they envy or try to destroy it.

as long as everyone loves canadians. LOL.
