Left-wing Unionists Support Apartheid
The main laws which created apartheid were consistently opposed by the Chamber of Mines and supported by the Left-wing unionists. The first statutory colour bar was passed in 1893 over the opposition of the Chamber which wanted workers hired on competency not on the basis of race. The 1911 Mines and Works Act, supported by the Labour Party and the unions, was also opposed by the Chamber. In 1920 the Chamber called for the complete abolition of colour bar laws. And the Chamber, in 1930 told the government "if they had a free hand there was 'not the slightest doubt' that they could do with 'a materially smaller' number of whites and could then employ more skilled blacks at 'a higher rate of pay'."
