Would you recommend buying an external hard drive/external DVD burner OR saving some cash by getting an internal HD & putting it in an external USB case? Anyone rig up a drive like this?

Get an internal cause its MUCH cheaper and all you have to do it fit it (pretty simple) and plug in 2 leads, 1 from the motherboard and 1 from the PSU (Power Suply Unit) if you need detailed instructions just pm me.

It depends on what are you planning to do. If you need to transport data, you need something external like a cdr/dvd or any other external drive. But if you only use it at home, I'd get and internal big HD.

UFO typin the most obvious shit ever...lol.
Dude the point is you can make an external hard drive out of an internal hard drive and a case. Thing is, I dont know if it will be as reliable, which is why I 'axed'.

I guess I should have been more clear. The unit would probably be used interchangably with a laptop & home pc. I'd probably use it during the day while doing work and stuff.

Reliability won't really be an issue. Just transfer rates, which at that point with USB 2 are almost negligible, depending on your bus speed internally.
