One time, back in band camp, I knew I was about to meet una Colombiana and spent some time practising to say, "Hola señorita, estoy encantado de conocerla", getting my accent as spot on as my Colombian companion could aid me with.

After waiting a few seconds for her to hit me with some unintelligible babble of Spanish, I replied with "Mi querida señorita, tristamente yo no hablo español", which I'd also practised.
