Anyone own a gym?

theoak01

New member
ive really been considering getting everything together ie: paperwork and find a building to start a gym,not one of those damn yuppie gyms but a gym for the real lifters,no backstreet boys or 5 rows of cardio equipment but tons of free weights, few machines and maybe 5-6 treadmills

can anyone offer some advice?
if i do this im going to try to get the equipment on a no money down lease so the equip is new every 5 years or so
and for the building im thinking 2000sqft-5500sqft depending on what i can find

any advice would be greatly appreciated

There is a reason there are no hardcore gyms that survive, there aren't enough hardcore people who would rather go there than Ballys. I can't even find a fucking golds near me.

you really have a point, and that was something i figured i would have to overcome

but i really dont want to sell out and have a yuppie gym,i want the chalk dammit

This is what I've always heard too, sad, but its generally true.

Heh when i was younger i thought the same thing. Then i learned better. A gym is a business and ahould be marketed to the biggest market, and that is the general public. If you go hardcore you will do very poorly or even go out of business. Yuppie gyms is not selling out, it's being smart in business.

theres a difference between going to a hardcore gym and owing one. If like the people said above, if you don't get the people to join your out your investment.

BTW- do you have an education is business? Just curious, I'm not saying it can't be done if you do not, it just helps alot.

i could have a yuppie gym and allow chalk and have the bigger weights, but it will be a no bullshit rules gym, none of this yuppie p/t bullshit either

no education in business as in a degree but ive taking business classes and marketing course's so ive got a good idea how to run a business

my credit is fine,so a loan should be a problem if its to start a business and i have my shit together

im just trying to keep my career options open thats all

this is next months edition of the Canadian oaks chronicles...

are fucking high?

you have no money, you are like 19. You have no degree. You business model has and will fail in virtually every locality in the multiverse. The one exception being California, where there are enough lifters to keep a hardcore atmosphere and a rich clientele (i.e. golds, Venice)

And, you pick a new dream to fixate yourself with every fucking month. pick something and stick to it.

how about a yuppie gym with another section in it for the Hardcore, then you could get all the audiences? Or am I just being stupid?

I suppose you've considered the liability insurance associated with running such a business. Also, make sure everything is handi-man accessible, including bathrooms. You'll have to have a certain number of handi stalls per member of the gym, if it's like the US. Then figure what collateral you're gonna have. You might want to look that one up.

Contact Quadsweep. I think I remember him mentioning he used to own a gym. He would be a good resource for information, and how really f***in' hard it is to start a new business.

Really think about this! I "had" perfect credit! Cards with $25,000 limits...Now I have jack shit and I lost my house too. And my gym had hardcore shit like 150# dumbells and Nebula leg equiptment but it is one hard biz! I had consruction over runs from asshole Building inspectors that cost me $75,000 and we lost all our working capitol. Cost me and my partener so much! It was and is still a sad chapter in my life! Think hard before you go here. I do not regret all of it but I do a lot of it. There were fun times but more bad times and it is still going on too!

Bro, I'm 24 and still have no idea what I want to do with my life. And it sucks like a motherfucker.Theres nothing wrong with having a dream. If you give up hope and dreaming what do you have left? But the reality of it is quite difficult. Its about like opening a resteraunt. 80% of all new restaraunts go out of business in the first 6 months. But if you think you have a chance at this, then go for it.

oh my god, where is Satanic Goatslayer when you need him! Some highlights over the past two years from Oak, he thought he was Bi, he was going to kick his dads ass, he was going to join the special forces, blah, blah, blahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

A hardcore gym could survive, but you're going to have to do 2 things:
1. ADVERTISE that it is a hardcore place. Aka an ad saying something to the effect like "are you a pussy that likes to wait on grandma's to get done with the bench press or do you want to go to a place for badasses"

2. Make gym membership CHEAP. Personally, I pay $135/yr for a good, public gym. But thats also b/c of the size of city I'm in and the fact local competition is fierce. When I visited Houston, some places like Bally's and 24 Hour Fitness wanted like $50+ a month for memberships. Thats crazy. If you make it cheap, you're going to need lots of dumbells and weights to keep people from getting impatient due to the amount of members. Say Ballys or 24HRF in your area want, say, $450 a year. Charge $150 a year.

3. KEEP that shit hardcore (ties in with #2) - If this is a hardcore gym, and you want to survive, you'll have to keep the membership up. However, the last thing you need in a hardcore gym is a bunch of old people or cheapskates that are only coming b/c of the very cheap membership dues. You need to weed these people out as much as possible. Play nothing but shit like AC/DC, Metallica, Creed, hardcore rap, etc. and make all members sign a waiver saying they wont bitch about the music choices if they contain cuss words. That alone will weed out most of the over-55 crowd. Put up inspirational signs, "No bullshit"-type policy signs, pics of bodybuilders, etc.

If you follow those rules, have a good business plan, heart, and can keep it hardcore, you could make $
