i believe tantra is a sanskrit word which translates to something like system. there are different types or 'paths' to tantra which vary in their approach towards spiritual unfoldment or strengthening of the physical and mental faculties (all of it goes hand in hand, though). some aspects, those notably found on the left-hand path, emphasize use of external modalities as a means of making progress by incorporating certain rituals. these rituals can involve food, drink, and sexual release, however that is neither the focus nor the end goal. when people think of tantra, they generally associate it with sex, but it is a lot more than that and has little if anything to do with sexual gratification as an end in itself.
