Anyone here into Boxing?

I want to get into boxing and I can't figure out how to get started. Been looking around here in North Jersey but no luck. Anyone know how I can get started at getting into this sport? Not really an anabolic question but I dont' any other place to post this question.

There aren't any gyms in n. jersey? go to a gym where boxers are trained. let someone there know you wanna learn. boxing trainers will usually spend good quality time with you if you stay dedicated. good luck with it.

Go to a real boxing gym (if there is none where you live you'll probably have to drive a ways) and train for a few months. Most have one hour classes of boxing workouts as well serious competitive training, all taught by boxing coaches.

Then if you want to get seriously into competition you will need a boxing license and start training twice a day, usually some running and weights in the morning and then specific work at night like bagwork, sparring, etc.

I have played virtually every sport in my life and IMO, boxing is the most brutal, violent, and exhausting training, hands down.

I recently started kickboxing. I'm not interested in full contact, though...it is great cardio and an interesting alternative to martial arts.

Contact you local PBA, they run the gyms that supply most of the golden glove fighters.

thanks everyone for your help. i'm familiar with totowa so i might look into that. will look into my local pba as well.

been interested in it for awhile but couldn't find out how to get involved. my stamina is really really low so i better work on that in training before stepping into the ring

Absolutely no doubt about that bro - boxing is THE ultimate test of physical and psychological strength, the ring can be a very lonely place and as for the training even Tyson said that the easiest part about boxing was the fighting! The stamina required is incredible as anyone who's ever been in a street fight will know that most fights only last a matter of seconds yet afterwards you feel absolutely knackered!

I don't know, Wrestling is pretty damn brutal...

I boxed for a year and a half and fought at 156 lbs. That was two years ago when i ended then i decided to play football again and started to use and now im at 230. My parents and friends were pretty skeptical but i said the ole "mom creatine just works really well for me" By the way boxing rules and it is a blast you will love it. Im surprised you cant find a gym in Jersey--I boxed in Colorado and there were a lot of clubs

dboxer911- thats a good list of links. That was more then I found in Jersey. Right now I just train at home. I lift 5 days a week and I don't think I can fit another gym into the day.

Not that its a big deal, but if you are strapped for cash, go to www.cityofdistribution.com. (they also sell boxing equipment on ebay.com. I got 4 pairs of gloves, a heavy bag, a speed bag, 1 mouth piece, 1 head gear (for sparring), and 1 pair of handwraps for 37 bucks (plus 8 bucks for shipping). I am not sure of quality, but all that for 45 bucks, i couldnt pass it up.

Hope this help.

I would forget boxing, you want a total body workout, try Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or submission fighting. In my opinion, nothing comes closer to working every muscle group in your body than that. The best thing about it is, you have a gold mine of top notch instructors in New Jersey too. It does not hurt to try, most offer a free first class, trust me, you'll become addicted.

The single most devastating and brutal standup martial art is Muay Thai kickboxing (and Boxing is considered a Martial Art.) Nothing comes close. The only other forms that will beat Muay Thai is Vale Tudo or Brazilian Jiujitsu. Because they incorporate Muay Thai in their stand up but they are also skilled grapplers. I've done, Boxing, Tae Kwon Do, and I'm currently doing Muay Thai. We incorporate American Boxing into Muay Thai because American Boxing style is much better than the Muay Thai boxing.
In Boxing you're only punching to body and the head.
In Muay Thai you're punching to the head and body.
Elbowing to the head and body.
Kicking to the head, body, and legs.
Kneeing to the head and the body.

If you want to really be a fighter, do Muay Thai.

Yes bro I have to agree I should have made my point clearer I really meant fighting in general compared to other sports! If you look at my profile you'll see that my other interest apart from BBing is kickboxing so I know all about Muay Thai, in fact my instructor who was a World Champion for years got knocked out in the first round of a fight against a relatively unknown Thai boxer!
