Anyone here build websites?

I have a guy that wants me to design him a site, some Flash but I have no idea what the going rate is for web design.

I'd be doing the site, all flash animations and other designs as well. What's the price you charge?

it depends how good you are and what is being done - but yeah, usually $100 an hour would involve some database stuff along with all that, look really solid, and only be a few hours of work.

bring it down to $10 or $20 and you won't scare him off. but in the end, it is whatever your time is worth (and your costs of operation over that time)

If the guy just wants a basic site some some simple animations, charge him a flat rate.

A good flat rate will get good word of mouth about your services.

If he wants an Oracle (or any db) back-end with user accounts and complex animations, charge him 50/hour plus materials [oracle license and software licenses et al].

Yea, it's not a complex site or anything. Just a basic "this is what my services are, bla bla, nice animation, bla" type of site.

I was thinking like $200-$250? Is that too high?

Yeah, thats about right.
Here's the problem though, you need to make sure that this guy is aware that once it's up and running that you have nothing to do with the site.

Doing this type of work without being an established corporation usually means the client keeps calling you long after you've delivered whenever anything goes wrong.

Thanks for the tip, I'll keep that in mind :)

If he did want me to maintain it. What would that run? An hourly rate? A monthly fee?

I usually charge $1000 for a static 5-7 page site. Includes some javascript, forms, no flash and basic html. Anything with flash should be worth more. I also charge extra for S.E. optimization and submitions.

When i first started in this type of business i charged alot more but companies now-a-days don't want to pay high prices for something their nephew can do. You try to make a living but webpages is not where it's at. I also make interactive cd-roms and videos which companies pay top dollar for.

Yea, I'm definitely not doing this as a business idea. I can do okay work, nothing intense with DB's etc, but just enough so that people who want a basic site can get that.

My brother knows I did a few sites and knew a guy who wanted one so he hooked me up with him.

We'll see how it goes :)
