Every problem I do in engineering now cannot be solved analytically - so it must be solved numerically such that you converge to a solution. Best way to do this is is to write a computer program which will run this iterative process loop....

I've seen this same issue with college kids on Physics Forums. I'd say go over there and ask/search (it's all free), 'cause it's been brought up numerous times and they can display code and Latex in posts that you can't here at EF.

Can you iterate the functional approximation using the Excel add-ins, a la Goal Seek?

I have a good old computational physics book by Steven Koonin, goes into great depth into using basic to do numerical differentiation, quadrature, eigenvalues, matrices and elliptical and Parabolic partials.

eh yeah I've seen it done in basic with a propeller design program.

I want a more up-to-date type code such as matlab where the outputs are contained in a better fashion.

thanks for the help guys

Also, do they still make mathcad? it always seemed more intuitive software than matlab.

Yeah, I picked up a copy for five bucks at my school store. It's nothing compared to MatLab.

Been a while since I had use for either, Matlab must've progressed while mathcad stagnated.

matlab is cool, I can get you a copy if you'd like.

Ya know, you COULDA mentioned this BEFORE I spent the hundred bucks to get the software for school.

Damned engineers. ;)

It's only free to engineers, we figured you physicists would just file for a grant.

We gave up writing grant proposals after getting rejected umpteen hundred times. We finally got the hint -- the scheming engineers up in "high places" took over the grant committees and have been oppressing us for years. It's the obvious and most logical answer.
