Anyone ever work contract jobs?

I hear that people swear by jumping from contract to contract position....the pay and experience is suppose to be great, but I just have a hard time dealing with lack of security...or at least the feeling of it. Anyone have experience with it...in IT, Design, Engineering?

Most people who enter contract jobs (at least here in cali) are people who got laid off their f/t jobs -- and need the quick cash. I know very few IT guys who do contract work by nature.

People in todays' climate would rather have that "security". They don't like having a 10 minute commute with one contract, and 2 hour commute with another (once again: going by LA as a reference).

I personally would never do it. Any gains you make for 4-6 months offset -- could be offset immediately if you're out of work for even a month. That "trying to find your next paycheck" exercise can get really old quick.

btw: Not to shed such a negative light on "contracting" (IT that is) -- but contracts that are say 1-2 years are more ideal. Going 2 years at $60/hr+ (bill yourself) -- and you *can* walk away with a pretty penny.

All those indian programmers in India? They're all contractors. Except they're lucky in that they can work on *their* turf. If you can secure contracts where you work at home -- you'll feel much more liberated and relaxed. Contractors usually don't get treated too well by employes btw in my experience. :(
