anyone drink alcohol?

rez

New member
i havent for months now...but sometimes feel left out when all my friends do. its worth it in my books

I can't stand to not drink when my friends get back together.
They only come back from school twice a month so its not too bad.

Once a month is what i do... Gotta have that special day... just don't have a "special day" too often. I feel after a day of alcohol bloated and muscles feel soft. So once a month is plenty for me...

you can take almost everything IN MODERATION

ie red wine is full in polyphenols (antioxidants) and lower cardiovascular risk
but too much wine / other alcohol is counterproductive

I used to drink more than anyone else I know, damn near every weekend, at least one night. If we went out, I got plowed. I've been contemplating severely cutting back. Haven't drank since New Years. Went to a bar last weekend, but just played pool, didn't drink. This weekend I can go out if I want, but to a bar where I'd just be sitting there, I don't know if I need to be put in that position. I can't shake this gut, and maybe cutting back the beer is an answer. The once a month thing may be good for me, I wonder if I could hold to that. I do know that they day after I drink, I wouldn't even bother going to the gym, I feel like crap.

Once a month! Damn, you guys are disciplined. I drink pretty much at least once a week( 2-3 margaritas). I do enjoy some red wine with dinner now and then but I hardly think that will cause any adverse effects. Red wine is good for you as long as you only have a glass or two. I think it all has to do with your metabolism, just look at any rock star- they drink constantly and stay skinny as hell.....

I do: 2 ussually 3 times a week

Do I know it is counter productive? YES

But I like partying and I like lifting and watching my diet (I am EXTREMELY careful about my diet other then the alcohol). It is working for me and I am happy - I still have visible abs and have jumped my weight from 145 to 173 since the begining of last semester.

Do what works for you and makes you happy, but I think it is truly a shame to give up one thing you like for another thing even if the thing is counter productive (which drinking IS).

i drink about once a month, i think that is fine especially since i stay good on my diets. i dont want to make my life strictly lifting and dieting, i dont think you need to totally avoid alcohol and once a month is fine.

o yeah also now that we are on this subject, about how many calories are in one beer? i hear 300 sometimes, and 100 sometimes, also about how many carbs?

I have that special day too usually once a month. But it's that special day when I don't drink. :beer:

Calories and carbs in beer:

The amount of calories is going to depend on the beer it will vary a lot - specificaly depending on the beer brand/light/full/etc.

Miller Light is 96 calories and 3.2 carbs I believe, Beast Light is 98 and 3.5, south paw light is 123 and 6 carbs, etc.

If it's only 3.2, 3.5 and 6 carbs which is 13, 14 and 24 calories, where do the remaining calories come from ?

Here is a list of beer cals:
http://www.theraven.com/beer.html

Generally, 1 jigger (1 1/2 ounces) of liquor (gin, rum, vodka and whiskey) contains:

* 97 calories
* 0 gm protein
* 0 gm fat
* 0 gm carbohydrate
* 14 grams alcohol

Kalua, a coffee liqueur, 1 jigger ( 1 1/2 ounces) has:

* 160 calories
* 0 gm protein
* 0 gm fat
* 17 gm carbohydrate
* 14 gm alcohol

The calories in alcoholic beverages come from alcohol, which contributes 7 calories per gram as opposed to 4 calories per gram for protein and carbohydrate and 9 calories per gram for fat. So if you take 7 calories per gram times approximately 14 grams of alcohol per jigger (1 1/2 ounces), this equals 98 calories. If the alcoholic beverage such as a liqueur also contains carbohydrate, then the calories for this beverage will be even higher and you can multiply the grams of carbohydrate times 4 to get the carbohydrate calories.

12 oz beer = 150 calories
12 oz lite beer = 110 calories
5 oz wine = 90 calories
1 1/2 oz liquor = 90 calories (with 6 oz carbonated drink mix add another 75 calories)

Latest research shows that 1 drink per day does not result in weight gain, which surprised me. However, persons who consume large amounts of alcohol and little food usually lose weight and have protein calorie malnutrition. Alcohol has been found to stimulate the appetite and one drink before meals has been prescribed for adults with a poor appetite.

If I was on a deserted island and has to choose between an endless supply of alcohol or weed I would have to choose the weed...much better and dosen't make you fat- well unless you get the munchies...alcohol is overrated, but still nice in moderation.

Beer definitely makes you look bloated the next day. Try drinking red wine, or scotch on the rocks (if your out with the boys). You'll look much leaner in the morning.

i am also suprised about the small amount of carbs in light beer,
i do like to drink 1-2 days a week, so now i will not feel so guilty when i have a few beers this weekend

Most of the calories are from alcohol. Alcohol has 7 calories per gram and they are empty calories. They cant be stored for energy and your body must metabolize those calories first, so if your eating anything while your drinking, your body automatically turns it to fat.

So it would be best to just not eat anything while drinking correct? That way all the empty calories are burned first and not stored as fat?

I will have the occasional Sam after work sometimes, but I haven't gotten really shitty for about three months when I went to visit some friends in Cali. I was reminded the next day why it had been about 6 months before that. I can handle my alcohol, but I am little so after a few a feel like I can drink 100 and it stays with me for about a week. Or it feels that way. I usually stick to 1 or 2 when out with friends and then everyone is guareented a responsible DD.

During the summer/winter break, I'll drink maybe once or twice each period......at school I drink just about every weekend (only one night though, and it doesn't take much to get me hammered)

But hey, you are only in your prime once, gotta live it up once in a while. Like someone said earlier, a life of strictly dieting and lifting isn't what I want.

Yeah, that would be your best bet. I used to do meatheaded things like come home from the bar and start eating cans of tuna or cooking chicken before i went to bed, thinking i'm getting all this extra protein. It really just kept me from getting leaner. I have really high metabolism, so drinking once a week wouldnt slow down my progress that signifigantly. My problem is that i don't know when to stop, and i get so hammered that im hungover the entire next day and i cant eat anything. Then i just feel like ive lost all my muscle. Thats why i try to only drink like one per month.
