Any risk of legal problems with "Free To Air" satellite tv?

My buddy says he can hook my up.
He used to be a satillite tv installer.
Just have to reset by computer every few months.
Sounds sketchy/shady, I'm too scared to do it.

No, it's free but most people using FTA are actually hacking dishnetwork which is illegal. Most of the free channels are crap BTW. Many in weird foreign languages. Want to watch the local news in Iceland? Water Buffalo riding?

guy said there was a LOT of channels.
He worked for dish and directv.
Receivers are about $160, not sure what updates cost, if anything.

My peace of mind is worth $50 a month.
I want to warn him if he is looking at possible criminal charges.
