How much do you make?

Well I have to pay em does that count. The three we have make on average after bounuses and commission about 25-30 per hour..........allthough I cant get any of them to work more than 25 hours a week

I make anywhere from 25-63 per hour. That's after the gym takes it's cut of course. It's a blast. I'm work no more than 25 hrs a week(lmao) and make decent money. I'm just happy to be doing something I never dread going in for!

Im starting soon. Ill be charging a 25$ initial consultation fee, and 35$ for each session. Doing it mostly in my community gym.

I'm very interested in becoming a trainer once I'm finished school. Where did you guys study? College? University? What courses did you take?

Dont waist your $$ on colage for a certifacate. Go on-line to a well known school and get it over the net, thats just as good. As a club owner I can tell you that where you get the certifacate is of little consern...........more interested in personal background, motivation, expertice, and overall knowlage.
I had a guy come in when we first opened up wanting to personal train and he had 2 years of collage under his belt along with certifacations for nutrition and P.T but never set foot in a gym. After some interviewing come to find out he had no knowlage of the most important things about training such as PEOPLE SKILLS the guy was an ass and on top of that he didnt know some basic things such as what machines were called! But he had alot of knowlage about very advanced things he could never use.

So what do people get when they deside to take you as PT...only the workouts? or do you also give them a diet....workoutschedule (or do you keep that for yourself) etc..?

I Train them on resistance training and cardio(in the beginning). After I teach them the cardio equipment and how long to go(etc) I spend most the hour on weights and stretching. As far as the diet goes, I can only offer them advice and tell them better food choices(technically). In Ohio it's against the law for anyone other than a registered dietician to prescrible a specific diet.

Depends on how much they want to spend. If they want a routine its one price but if they want a diet to go with it your talkin more money. To be a good trainer IMO you need to have a nutritional certificate as well. All our trainers have both, as a matter of fact most trainers have both anyway. As for our gym, every member that signs a contract gets a body comp, personal consultation with a trainer to review goals, and commitment level, ext.,a personalized diet, a workout routine and one free session with a trainer to go over the diet and routine and answer any questions. 12 weeks later we do a review at which point we sell our personal training and suplements to them.

What are the req's to get a nutrition cert and where are you located? Here in Ohio you can't write out jack if your not a registered dietician which is atleast 4 years at a university.

realistically you cant write out anything, unless you follow guidelines that are audited and monitored by an RD. Even large corporate gyms have to follow specific guidelines because anything written and given to a client is like a prescription (from specialist to client). If that client gets hurt and its not within standards of safety (or health in this case) you are done! specific healthy ratios must be followed as well as acceptable levels of calories and nutrients.

I'm glad that the manager of my gym is pretty relaxed. My Sunday Clients pay me $5 to train from 2:00 to 7:00. We have little injuries, do crazy stuff, and quite often puke or black out.

The way we do it is at the top of the nutritional info papers including the diet there is a disclaimer that we arent dietitions we are mearly recomending a diet. And to cousult your Doc before you do anything. Your basic CYA statement. As far as state law Im not aware of any law like that here.

Ya we give them a binder with there body comp results, Diet, and routine which we review with them when they pick it up on ther first visit. I have an electronic copy in our company cpu. This is a new way to oprerate a fitness center, so far it is workin well we are about to reach 1000 members, which was our goal for the end of the year.

Very true...........we had our lawyer review and revise our nutritional and personal training disclaimers so we take the stand of a third party advisor. Any advise from us as far as training and diet must be cleared by your md/dietition ext..............

sounds like a great idea...so every member gets a binder? Do you own the gym?

Yep, every member that wants one, which is just about everyone. I co-own it along with my parents and wife. I was worried about going into business with family but so far it is going good. The real nice thing is this way we dont need to have any investors or partners so we all make a lot more money. We are all going to go to a Thomas Plummer seminar the 23rd and 24th of this month in Chicago.....................Those are always cool, that guy is awasome!

As long as all of the family members remain civil, family run businesses can be extremely successful. I am about to go into business with my parents helping me too, but not married yet, thank god!

Exactly. It can be rough getting started without money, which is what i am trying to do. I plan on leaving school with my masters in public health and then venture back into the motel/hotel industry. Time to open/buy one down south with my parents assistance. Have to help take care of the old folks down the road, so just ensuring myself that i will be able to.
