Just wondering how long it "usually" takes for stuff to decompose?

those damn steak bones have been in there forever.

I'VE GOT A GREAT COMPOST PIT. BASICALLY I TAKE ALL MY SHITS IN THERE AS WELL AS PUT ALL MY GARBAGE SCRAPS AND SHIT. AND I BUY THESE PH STICKS FROM THE FARM + FEED THAT HELP ME DETERMINE IF IT NEEDS TO BE PH BALANCED. OH AND ONCE IN A WHILE I GO BUY SOME COMPOSTING BACTERIA AND TOSS THEM IN THERE TOO. IT'S A BIG OLD FESTERING HEAP, I DONT LIKE TO TOUCH THAT SHIT

I composte. And I have for 9 years..
It all depends on what you put in there.
You can buy stuff to help it along.
But I never had too!
I put all veg. scraps, egg shells etc. and left overs!

Never put steak bones, but I have turkey carcus and bones from
chickens.
But I have wild cats living up in the woods behind my house, they
eat all that!

I was only joking about the steak bones.

I put all organic stuff in as well. No meats, or fats.

the stuff just seems to sit there for ever though.

My hubby is into this type of stuff for his garden.

I see him out in the shit pile(as I call it) using a pitch fork to turn over the pile. It allows the heat from underneath release and it'll make the process speed up.

I will say this, he has soil that feels like silk and we have the best darn veggies and herbs in town!

My sister used to have a compost toilet. The seat was in the house (where you do your business) and then the toilet extended out the back of the house like 10 feet.

Just shit, piss, what ever, use paper like normal BUT there is no flushing.......... just toss cedar chips in on top !!! She would throw all her kitchen scraps in it so when you went to use it you never knew what you were going to be shitting on.

On the back end, there was a hatch and you could then shovel out the ready to use compost/fertilizer.

I found it rather disgusting, although it NEVER stank. She eventually got a real toilet and shower installed in the house (it was a 200 year old farm house and her and her husband were into a more simple life, then)
