I am looking to buy the Mongoose XR-100. Do any of you know about this bike or Mongoose bikes in general? Are they good bikes? the main reason I am intrested in this particular bike is because I dont want to break the piggy bank on a specialized or cannondale. also I weigh about 285, I am concerned if this bike can support me. any help is appreciated, thanks!

A buddy of mine's got an old Mongoose, and that thing's sturdy as hell, but it weighs a ton. He's a big guy (6'4", around 250, I think) and had a hard time with the wheels and tires on occasion, but that's about it. He bought some reinforced tubes and tires, and that solved his problem.

I've got an older Cannondale, and I love it, although I don't ride nearly as much as I used to.

Mongoose are ok at best.
But 285!!!!!!!!!!
DAMN !!!! Youre gonna have a TOUGH time with any bike if you plan on doing anything even halfway serious. You'll be flexing the cranks like crazy (not to mention the frame).
At 285 you gotta spend some $$$ if you want a bike that will be able to handle moderate punishment.

If you only plan on riding around town then the 'goose should be ok, otherwise I suggest spending money and getting a bike you won't regret.

Where do you live and what are you planning on doing?
BTW - Cannondale (aka Crack n'fail, Crappendale) are NOT worth the money. Santa Cruz, Kona, Rocky Mountain and Norco are some of the better brands.

I live in SC and plan on doing some riding on both the streets and the local parks. the terrain is real sandy here so its usually hell on a bike/gears. I was shopping around and damn bikes are expensive these days. I saw most for over 1k. if I am spending that much I dont want to have to break a sweat, it better be motorized!

So nothing really rough in the mountains/hills?
If you want a sturdy bike ask for a "freeride" bike. It'll be heavier, but thats cuz its sturdier.

If you are just crusing parks and streets then the Mongoose should be ok.

I hear ya on the price of these things. 'Extreme' biking is really popular up here (Alberta and BC) ... my bike was over $4.5k (crazy, I know). And the funny thing is... you see TONS of bikes that price around here.
