any mountain bikers here?

i want to start riding, since they put some nice paths in around my area and i figure it could be some good change in cardio once in awhile... so i went into the basement and pulled out the old bike only to find it needs at the least new brake pads, 2 new tubes, 2 new tires etc

so i go and pick these items up, costs about 50 bucks. now i see i can get a new one for just over 100 bucks or so?? i'm thinking i should go return the parts and just get a new one

but, what is the difference in these 100$ bikes vs. ones that run hundreds or even thousands of dollars? i'm not going to be doing anything competitive or races or anything but what should i look for in a new one if its just for exercise and leisure??

How much off road biking are you gonna be doing? How rough are the trails?

A cheap bike will be fine if you are doing it occasionally and the trails aren't rough, otherwise the higher priced bikes are what you need. Cheaper ones fall apart.

i wont be doing so much off road biking. most of the paths are paved. i just dont want one of those bikes with the tires 1/2 and inch thick lol

then a cheap bike is fine for you. The only downfall I would see is the heaviness of the cheaper bikes if there are steep grades in the trail.

have fun!
