Any golfers out there?

I suck at golf... you may not. Anyone know of any literature (book, website???) that may reduce the probability of me hitting the ball 100 yards (or is it feet?) and having it curve over the net-fence of the driving range and attack the group of golfers with the $1,000,000 clubs trying to play.

Yes, but if you practice swinging incorrectly, then you will become a master of swinging incorrectly - something I'm attempting to avoid.

There's a book by Ben Hogan that's really good. The only problem is I can't remember the damn name of it Do a search on amazon for Ben Hogan and you should have some luck finding it. Here's my only advice for you with golf-spend just as much, if not more time hitting wedges and putting than using your woods and long irons. Master the technique with the wedge, then you'll realize that you make the same damn swing for everything, but you simply use a different club and alter your stance to accomodate the difference in length/loft of the club.

Take a few lessons, then spend a lot of time at the driving range, take some more lessons, play nine holes, more time at the range, etc, etc.

Invest $200 and take three or four lessons. I good teaching pro can turn your game totally around with 4 half hour sessions. Get books to help fine tune your game after you've mastered all the basics, but don't get books to actually teach you the major skills.

My wife and I do go to a driving range a couple times a year and wack balls though. Because we realized all we really like about golf is hitting them off the T.

I can wack on 350 + no shit. I can't putt worth a fuck though.

Like bigguns said, take some lessons and I would recommend the bobby jones video tapes.

Most Pro Shops have those video re-play machines so you can see what the hell you're doing wrong with the "swang". Ask the Pro at the club...that's what he gets paid for, doll!

It goes down to 1then you become a scratch golfer.

Warik golf is simply feel. You need to play enough to where you know what your are doing wrong. If your are hooking the ball, the ball maybe to far back in your stance, your stance may be closed, or your shoulders are closed. Keep your right elbow tucked and your head down. By doing that you eliminate A LOT of problems, there is no reason to swing hard. The bigger shoulder turn you get, the more power, like a coil effect. The most important part is the the short game. What good is 350 yard drive if you cant make the putt from three feet? If i were you i would watch the golf channel, they have a show call "Academy live" that talks about the swing. Good show. Another thing is dont get wrapped in buying expensive clubs. Learn how to eat the ones you have and move up. Try and feel the contact of the ball on the clubface. Once you feel it after a few times, you will know if you are hitting on the heel or toe. If you are duffing the ball then its most likely because your are lifting your head. You cannot hit something if u not seeing it. Your stance needs to be bent at the knees a little with your back erect. Dont slouch over the ball, believe it or not it an athletic stance. Dont pull a john daly and go past parallel at the top, again your power comes from your shoulder turn. If you are blocking the ball right its because your hips are coming through the ball before your shoulders. Hope this helps.

BigDawg....he's right! For those who shoot better than par, there is a - by their handicap, whether it's -1, -2, -3, etc.

Damn Golfer, that's pretty impressive. Are you currently in college and playing on the golf team? Sounds like you could do a lot with a handicap like that. What's your best round? Do you have any intentions of pursuing PGA or Nike Tour events?

I went down to Hilton Head this past week and watched the WorldCom Heritage Golf Classic. They have a Pro-Am you can play in on Wednesday's before the tournament starts. Cost..............$5000 to play one round with a Pro!

If you have never seen John Daly hit the ball, you can't even imagine how far and hard he hits that golf ball! That ball just seems to explode off of his driver. It was remarkable! Good for you! I played in a Pro-Am Tourney when the Nike Tour came here. Played with a Pro by the name of Jackson Brigman. Pretty good golfer to say the least. He was about 13th on the money list at the time. He had aspirations of playing on the PGA Tour and had to go through Q School. I saw about a year or two later on one those specials on the Golf Channel that followed several wannabes through Q School. It showed Jackson during this special and he had actually qualified for the PGA but signed the wrong score card and was disqualified!!!!!!! What a bonehead thing that was. It showed him afterwards hugging his gf or wife and he was balling his eyes out. So close but yet so far! Q School must be grueling!?!

That's fucking awesome! A fucking 30!?!?!?!?!?! Zoned the fuck out by far! I played with a friend of mine in a tournament. He had a 9 handicap and the last day he shot a 68 straight up with no shots. It was one of the best rounds I have ever had the pleasure to witness. My best nine was a 34 with two bogeys. My best round was a 72 even par. Never had an under par full round and never have had an ace! That sucks!

Thanks for all of the information, guys. The golf course my friend and I go to have some kind of "golf school" program that lasts 4 weeks for $80 and it teaches the basics of driving, putting, etc... Going to look into it. Hopefully I won't need my own clubs to attend the class, because I don't have any. =)

I'll also check out Ben Hogan's book. I'm sure that with practice I will get better and it will be months before I can even attempt to play a game without using up all the gas in the golf cart to chase my ball all over the course, but now I must focus on learning HOW to practice correctly. =)

What kind of clubs do you play with? What kind of putter?

I have the Callaway Big Bertha's 1-Gap wedge. Taylor Made TI2 6.5 degree driver and a 3-wood knock off I picked up somewhere. I put with a old Wilson blade putter like Ben Crenshaw. Damn, I love that putter! I've tried other brands but I keep coming back to that putter.

Im hitting it about 340 off the tee so there is no need for a lower loft. I had Hogan blades but im working on getting the new callaways. I have Reid Lockhart wedges, the most amazing wedge i have ever played. I have Titleist DCI starship thats my 3 wood. Sounds like its made of iron when i hit it, TINGG!

A 6.5 degree driver? Damn, how do you get that thing off the ground? I hit a 9.5 or 10.5, but I smash the hell out of it, low ball with a nice draw. TM 360 with a Proforce 65 shaft....gotta love it. I agree on the Pro V1, good ball. The Precept MC Lady is pretty good too, but I play mostly Titliests.

Anyone thinking about entering the Pinnacle Long Drive contest they are advertising on tv? The first couple rounds have been won by people hitting 280-320...and beating the pro for $10k first prize. It seems the pro was hitting about 360, but couldn't keep in on the grid. I imagine the pressure is pretty intense, but I can whack one 300+ with little problem.

That's what us old folks use for distance! You have to tee it up high and kind of tilt the clubhead back a little. Sometimes you get some "idiot marks" on top of the clubhead but you do get some distance from it. LOL! Believe me, I have hit enough wormburners to warrant finding a way to hit it. I think I might go with higher degree loft though because I have had to redesign my golfswing in order to hit it! I'm an old dog so I find it hard learning new tricks!

I saw Davis Love III and Sergio Garcia this past week. These guys are very small to say the least. Form and technique speaks volumes! It's funny though, most of the guys on tour are really not that big except somebody like Daly who is mostly gut. Norman wasn't that tall. He looks tall on TV but in real life he is just average.

I had to go golfing witht the heads of the company last week....I hate to golf...mainly because I am terrible at it...

Our tee time was at 8:30 am...I had just finished working 4 graveyards in a row, was dead tired with a patience level on low...

First off....what is the deal with the clothes these people wear...or at least some of them. I showed up dressed pretty casual...with CK jean shorts and a shirt...First comment I received..."that is a "cute" golfing outfit..." (I was thinking..."Yeah...nice plaid pants asshole"...I said..."Oh Thank You sir...I never know what to wear to these events")

Anyway..It seems even the worst golfers always have "valuable" tips to offer... And everyone was offering me advice: "Slow and even", "Hold it like your shaking hands with the club.." "Golf is a game of extreme patience and dedication..." I bit my tongue most of the day...trying to avoid asking why most of these "refined" golfers had hit most of their balls into the brush....

The most enjoyable part of the day...of course was at the Clubhouse "watering hole"

It's funny to watch the reaction of the people on the green as my ball rolls up, and they realize I'm still on the tee. LOL. Then I accidently air mailed one about 50 yards past their carts a couple holes later (they were in a gully) and figured I better take it easy the rest of the way around.

I was playing at The Quarry in San Antonio when i hit that drive........number 15. Fucking nailed it. Instead of my ball coming off the club face normal, its more off a rocket, like up then forward. I find it makes golf a lot more fun since my short game is just as good. My dad and his friends laugh when i hit it. I love golf but i dont feel like playing it now. I have more interesting things like women that i like. Yeah thats the 19 year old in me.

The best thing to do is to take some classes if it hasnt been done yet. Once you have the good swing everything will be allright, at least not as bad as before.

Yep Snottsdale........errrrrrrrrr I mean Scottsdale is definately the happening town in the PHX area. Next time you come out you need to hit Gold Canyon....... #1 rated public course in AZ. Outstanding!!!!!! Nothing like hitting off a tee box between 2 mountains about 100yds above the green. Check it out :
