Somebody on this site suggested this absinthe and it is supposed to be the strongest stuff they can legally make. Absinthe is illegal to sell but legal to posess in the U.S. It's kind of a catch twenty two but you can order it without much fear of anybody prosectuing you.

As for my experience with it, I was not all that impressed. I had a friend bring me a bottle of the real deal back from Spain over the summer. The preperation is pretty cool and it tastes good but I didn't notice any abnormal effects except you seem to stay a little more clear headed even if you get a little drunk. The standard prep is to 1. pour a shot or three of it into a tall glass. Have some ice water on standby. 2. take a spoon of sugar and dip it in Absinthe leaving the Absinthe soaked sugar on the spoon. 3. Light the sugar on fire and as it carmalizes pour it into the Absinthe. 4. Typically, as you pour, the absinthe in the glass will also catch on fire. 5. Pour the ice cold water into the Absinthe to extinguish the flames and dilute the alcohol. 6. Drink up.

All in all it's cool for something a little different but don't expect anything mindblowing

I forgot to mention...stay the fuck away from the homemade stuff. Wormwood is extremely poisonous in the right doses and many a hippy dipshits have been hospitalized attempting the do-it-yourself stuff.

How much did you drink? I would drink more than 3 shots. At least 6 or so

you can't drink absinthe straight up?

AAP- you can drink it straight but it's usually 140-160 proof and really harsh without the sugar and water.

Chewy- the most I ever tried was 4-5 shots. I found a website that provided recommended doses and 4-5 was even pushing what they suggested. I wanted to try and experience the Absinthe without getting shit-faced but, maybe that's why I've only had ho-hum experiences.

Where's Satanic Goatslayer? Can't have a thread about absinthe without SG.

a buddy of mine has a bottle in him home... yes it is green... we havent had it yet.. he got it from mexico.... apparently here in canada its avail... i'll hav eto go looking when i get a chance :D

very hard to find real absinth anywhere but czech republic, most DONT have any wormwood as the conversion process is illegal in 95% of the world, which includes most of europe, canada, mexico....

I've done the Salvia Tea. That shit is beyond trippy! Be ready for a good 4 hour trip on that puupy.

AAP,

Mon, real Absinthe IS ADDICTIVE! Thats BAD.

My dad did a favor for a Foreign Navy that was in serious trouble in SF harbour in the 50s... as a present they gave him a case of absynthe of which 10 of the 12 bottles survived to the time i was in my late teens and found them.

I can verify that none of the original bottles from that case are intact.

:lmao:

It was illegal in the UK until a few years back. You can buy it in some supermarkets now. Tesco stocks it and I bought a bottle last year. It was, I think, 68% alcohol (136 proof) and I liked the aniseed taste. It's clear green until you add water when it goes cloudy green.

I just took it with water rather than getting into the voodoo of the special spoon and igniting it with sugar or anything. It gives a pleasant buzz and I recall getting weird dreams after drinking it. There's an active ingredient in absinthe called thujone which is a mild hallucinogen.

good shit, i would invest in a couple of cheap absinth spoons and glasses, great conversation piece

also google absinth(e) kits

So I decided to try some Absinthe. 3 bottles and some of that sugar and special spoons and glasses. Anyone try the below varieties? I'll probably save it for the summer.

ALANDIA Suisse La Bleue Clandestine
Absinthe Abisinthe Amer
Absinthe Abtshof 80

that guy that went missing off the cruise ship had been drinking it with his friends.

I sell it at the off license where I work, amazingly expensive for such a nasty tasting drink (aniseed/liquorice), about ÂŁ35 for a 70cl bottle (vodka would cost you around ÂŁ12). Stuff we sell is the wormwood variety and lime green and 70% alcohol (140 proof?) - I found it just gets you drunker quicker whilst tasting horrible :)

Tis was the problem with the original stuff, back at the turn of the last century. Drove people crazy, it was outlawed all over the world. The new stuff is safe. Just 140 proof booze. My daughter bought a bottle at the LCBO, & I wasn't impressed. I'd rather have a rusty nail.

i brought a good 5 opr 6 bottles of it back from Prague this summer.

Shit burns your throat on the way down. Really strong. Fucks ya up like any other alcohol. Did the whole light the sugar on fire and drop it in bullshit but who gives a fuck.

Can't be good if you'd rather have a rusty nail. I'll open a bottle this weekend to try, maybe.

I drank mine diluted but without any sugar or rusty nail.

HunterUK, Tesco sells a brand call Le FĂ© for about ÂŁ20 for 500 ml.

only the real stuff slyvokia or however u spell that shit will make u trip, anywhere else doesn't have the hallucinate in it

The Swiss brands are generally considered the best. Instead of a neon green, they are more of a blue-green. A lot of their stuff is home-brewed. The kits you can buy to make your own are generally pretty good. Just be sure to distill the alcohol instead of just steeping the herbs. You can get the strange effects from steeping, but part of drinking absinthe is actually enjoying its taste. Won't happen with steeping. Plus, with distillation, you are more likely to get a liquor that will louche (turn opaque from the volatile oils in the absinthe hitting cold water), which is part of the overall effect of the mood of the drink.

A lot of people order online and have it shipped over (this is how I experienced it). However, many of the European brands are underdosed in Thujone (the psychoactive chemical in wormwood that gives it the additional "umph") due to the fact that too much of it is a neurotoxin. There are numerous brands...Spanish and Japanese generally considered the stronger ones. The most common brand is Hill's, which is generally considered the worst...so bad that it is nicknamed "Swill's".

http://www.originalabsinthe.com

Absinthe liquor is an alcoholic drink made with an extract from wormwood (Artemisia absinthium). It is an emerald green absinthe drink which is very bitter (due to the presence of absinthin) and is therefore traditionally poured over a perforated absinthe spoon full of sugar into a glass of water. But strong absinthe is also becoming well-liked as a base for cocktails.

For those that like the taste of absinthe and don't like ingesting neurotoxins, I would reccomend trying to get your hands on Herbsaint. It's A Louisianan liquor that was created to replace absinthe in New Orleans after it became outlawed. There are other alternatives (Pernod, Absinth), but none of them taste as good.

Now I want a Sazerac. Arrg.

ain't that the truth? the only thing I am going to light up is my trick's ass.

Yeah, but...sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to get the goth girls to come home with ya...

I was just reading an ad in an art mag from this place that claims to use the exact recipe used in the 1800's (when van gogh and all the other artists of that time used it). I'll check out the mag when I get home and post a link.

What Vectork39 said, there are about 3 types/grades of eurofunk.($100-$200)
I've done some experimenting, it's not about the alcohol, it's
the sort of metaphysical/etheric properties of the additives, (mostly toxic wormwood)
It opens the brow, or third eye chakra. It would be good for your liqour collection,
but i get sick of it fast, don't know how you could get addicted.

if the thread title was "another thread about ford mustang's" would you have said:
mustangs? get some metal, go chase down some plastic (which is produced in the states) and steep the plastic in the metal. end result: ford mustangs

Yeah, it's a cultural icon amongst the goths and even some emo kids.

An Absinthe buzz was truly wierd for me. It was like an anti-weed feeling (which is odd, because the active ingredient in Wormwood is Thujone, which is molecularly similar to THC).

For me, it was like seeing all things as true and ugly. For the truth IS ugly, most of the time. However, I also felt disinhibited by the high alcohol content. So I didn't care.

Wierd, wierd experience.
