Another martial arts thread...

I'm looking to learn one of the martial arts...But, unfortunately, I have NO idea about any of them. Any suggestions on which styles (is that what you call them?) I should look into?

I've always wanted to learn some sort of fighting style (other than the usual drunken bar fighting technique) but have no idea where to start.

Any help is appreciated...thanks!

It really depends what you are looking for in it. There are traditionals which are going to be more....artistic than functional (in a fighting sense), there are mixed martial arts (MMA), there is grappling (wrestling, BJJ, etc). There is Thai kickboxing which I think is a good place to start. There are reality based self defense school out there (RBSD) which are more street fighting based (they aren't limited by the nature of a sport...which is rules).

What is available in your area will also have an impact I'm sure.

So what is it that you are really looking for?

The last thing you mentioned sounds like it's right up my alley. I've always been interested in learning some sort of fighting style, not really for self-defense, because I've got that pretty much taken care of...I doubt I could ever use any of that stuff anyways, cuz I usually just flip out if I get in a fight (rarely)...it works, but I'm sure someone who's into martial arts could take me out in a second or two.

I really just want to learn any kind of style, but I find street-fighting stuff more interesting. I did a search, and I couldn't really tell which stuff was bullshit, and which was any good...so I asked here.

The one thing I found that sounded kind of cool was this:

It's probably a joke...but like i said, I don't know much about this stuff.

So karde, do you know anything about RBSD? I live in Boston, so I assume there are a good amount of self-defense schools around here being a pretty big city.

Also, what would YOU, personally, recommend?

Thanks alot buddy...You've already been very helpful...Karma to ya! :)

Hi there
I've been involved in martial arts since i was 12
anyway there are alot of martial arts out there
which one is best? there's no answer to that question there are however probably styles that will suit you and cater for you better than the other
Are you looking for fitness? competition? self defence? traditionalism?

I train in Muay Thai and Kickboxing but i've done Tae Kwon Do, Karate and stuff during my lifetime

So you say you want to learn how to fight as opposed self defence
I think you should check out Muay Thai (Thai Boxing)

Thai boxing imo is the most practical stand up style of martial arts (standup means that that the fighting is done on your feet and doesn't end up in grappling on the floor like Jiu Jitsu)

Muay Thai is known as the devastating science of 8 limbs because you use elbows, fists, knees and your shins to full effect to devestate your oponent
Not only is it a great street defense skill but also an awesome ringsport! I have tonnes of clips if you'd like to see
I would say Muay Thai (and Also burmese boxing and cambodian boxing) are the toughest and most dangerous sports out there when fighting full rules (western rules tame it down not allowing bare elbow strikes or knee strikes to the face)
I've checked the link and it's a wing Tsun(wing chun) school
Wing Chun is a form of Kung Fu. It's a very fast art but imho unless you devote alot of time and get really really good, it's not as easy to pick up as something like Muay Thai

Sorry buddy, i'm not familliar with where New England is (i'm from old England hehehe)
if you can tell me what state and where abouts u are, i can try asking my contacts in the sport about a school near u

Take it easy!
