Nationwide sweep snares Internet drug traffickers

Associated Press

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In a clampdown on Internet drug dealers, federal, state and local authorities said Wednesday they have made arrests and conducted searches in dozens of U.S. cities where traffickers have used computers to sell the "date rape" drug GHB.

Investigators conducted more than 150 searches and made a number of arrests in a law enforcement sweep in more than 70 U.S. cities, marking the first-ever probe of its kind involving the Internet and GHB, a federal law enforcement official said.

KARE-TV, Channel 11, reported Wednesday night that several federal agencies spent more than 11 hours Wednesday in a drug raid at a Lakeville house. ******* police, the ******* County drug task force, and the local offices of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Internal Revenue Service wouldn't comment on the raid and referred questions to the U.S. attorney's office in Minnesota. U.S. Attorney Tom Heffelfinger declined to comment Wednesday.

The federal law enforcement official discussing the national sweep said that about 25 dealers were considered primary targets in the investigation, which began two years ago.

The traffickers operated their own Web sites where customers could log on and place their orders for GHB and similar drugs, which would then be delivered via mail.

Attorney General John Ashcroft and DEA Director Asa Hutchinson planned to detail the operation at a news conference today.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Customs Service and the FBI also participated in the investigation.

GHB is a mixture of common industrial chemicals that Congress outlawed several years ago. The drug and its derivatives, GBL and 1,4 BD, act as central nervous system depressants and cause drowsiness, dizziness, nausea and loss of inhibition. The DEA has documented 72 deaths from GHB and its derivatives.

Lakeville Raid Part of National Crackdown

A drug bust at a Lakeville home Wednesday was reportedly part of a national crackdown on a ring that sold the so-called date rape drug GHB over the Internet.

Attorney General John Aschcroft revealed details of “Operation Webslinger” Thursday. Ashcroft said the sweep netted 115 dealers in 84 U.S. and Canadian cities.

Investigators say, more than 25 million doses of GHB were seized. Authorities also confiscated chemicals used to make the drug.

Agents from the Drug Enforcement Agency raided the Lakeville home Wednesday because they believe it may be involved in the selling of club drugs to young people. While local DEA agents refuse to confirm yesterday’s raid – Minneapolis is listed as a site of a Webslinger raid on the DEA web site.

Sources say two chemicals used in club drugs were found in a raid of the same home in 2000. Possession of the chemicals is not illegal.

The owner of the house, whose name is not being released, is on vacation.

GHB is a mixture of common industrial chemicals. The drug can cause drowsiness, dizziness, nausea and loss of inhibition. People who take the drug, sometimes unwittingly, also suffer memory lapses. The DEA has documented 71 deaths from the drug.

The drug is sold over the Internet by dealers operating their own websites and is delivered by mail.

“This takedown is a dose of harsh reality for drug traffickers who seek to exploit the vast markets and anonymity of cyberspace,” Ashcroft said.

Note the quote from kare11 article. So if they found chemicals to make it, but not GHB itself and possession and sale of the chemicals isnt illegal then why did they go trash his place? I hope he sues their asses for harassment.

I don't think exposure is his problem. He's incredibly public anyway, and apparently his racing opponents are well aware of his outspoken stance on performance enhancers.
