Animal Drug testing

Curious question for athletes:

How do you feel about using animal models to test drugs for human uses?
Knowing that it is regulated by AWA.

Example. One disease humans get is known as hyperthyroidism.
One way to test a thyroid drug is by using an animal model. One could use a cat. Feline hyperthyroidism is a similar to humans only it occurs in felines (cats). Studies can be performed to test the effective of new compounds or existing ones on cats before the drug is used in humans.

But lets not limit this just to feline and human hyperthyroidism.

Other compounds can be used in the same fashion.

I am doing a paper in small animal research techniques class and I would like to include views from some of elite group.

Lets hear some View points.
Thanks

Well, animal models are an important way to test products of all sorts. However we can never be sure that the results will correlate well with human results - no matter how close the systems. Even in human trials, until it is released to the larger market we cannot be sure how it will work for the majority. That is why about 10% of all new drugs are recalled within the first year after release for human use (Phase 3 studies).

But we cannot really just start off giving drugs to humans - luckily guys at elite fitness will test them for everyone else :)

I understand the point against it, but in order for the human race to advance, beat diseases etc it is necessesary. You have to decide, is my grandmother or a cat worth more to me?

Good point.
Animal modeled research yields results that cannot be safely applied to humans. That is, we can’t safely test a thyroid drug on a human with out knowledge of the outcome. Therefore, we use animals.
