American Blind patriotism (Example)

Y_lifter

New member
We have had a couple of threads speaking of American's Blind patriotism in regard to us being attacked
and wanting to kick ass and we are the best, waving flags etc.

I dis-agreed with most thoughts such as it being wrong being proud to be American and all that we stand for and have done in the past etc.

But this morning, a prime example of American Media Blind Patriotism hit me and I had to laugh and shake my head.

Before the USA FIFA Soccer team upset Portugal, you hardly heard anything from the average joe on the street about Soccer or the world cup.
News reports on the Networks and CNN were few and just 20-30 seconds long if you were lucky.
Those fans were never talked about and it seemed the "General" US population was not really behind the US team or Soccer in general.

Suddenly I'm seeing news reports about the World Cup on all channels all the time,
Live shots of World Cup parties and mass crowds all waving the US flag.
WORLD CUP FRENZY is the byline on the stories.
Live reports from England for this mornings game.
Very little actual history or information on FIFA, just people screaming USA, USA, USA

Is it really the American people that are at issue, or simply the Media making us all look like hypocrites with their sudden blind interest in something they ignored when the US was low in the Cup rankings and expectations ?

Actually, I think it's mostly the media realizing they were missing a good story.

It turns out now that thousands and thousands of fans across the country got up early in the morning to watch the U.S. -Portugal game. The 4:55 A.M. match got the largest ever audience for a soccer game on ESPN2, handily beating out the France-Italy semifinal in the '98 World Cup. Those crowds you saw on TV celebrating the win weren't reacting to the news in the paper - they had been watching in bars and stadiums like the Columbus Crews' all over the country.

So I think in this case the bandwagoning is by the reporters, columnists and TV sports anchors around the country who were more or less completely blindsided by the win.

I don't think many people who didn't give a rat's ass about the national soccer team before the World Cup are thinking any differently now.

That is correct. USA won? Good for them. Doesn't change the fact that I don't like soccer.

Except for the Damn Sports/News Media..

I also believe those true US Soccer fans were in this from the beginnning. Regardless of how we did or where we were ranked.

I just found it funny how suddenly everyone I know that didn't have a clue about FIFA is now acting like a Big USA team fan..

The only thing I have heard is the sound clip of the ESPN (?) announcer after the USA/Portugal match.

"USA 3, Portugal 2. My eyes have seen the glory!"

GIVE ME A F'IN BREAK !

Did the United States win the Cup? No, then shut the hell up. Personally - watching Michael Johnson setting a World/Olympic record in the 400m -or- the women's soccer team's victory, but not this game.

Someone made the comment on the Radio yesterday that the reason they felt Americans by and large don't like or follow Soccer and the World Cup is because America is not #1 or 2 in the standings.

I tend to believe that's probably true.

The old Fair Weather fan syndrome.

Heh, that's probably ESPN's Jack Edwards. He's a really good guy and he's been a friend of U.S. soccer for years, but he's also a genuine goofball as a play-by-play announcer, more than a little prone to hyperbole.

I guess I haven't really run into many people who have hopped on the bandwagon. But you know what? It's all good. We need all the buzz we can get in this country and imagine what things would be like if we had lost. Another four years of gloom and doom.

Let's hope when it's all said and done we'll need to order a few more bandwagons to accomodate the passengers. :D

yeah, she had a nice rack as i remeber, even if there was a sports bra infront of it. they should encourage that more

as with many people, they only support the sports their country is good at. i think the US fits that when it comes to football, the U?K to a lesser extent too

nice to see so many england flags out on cars and houses though. never seen that before.

How could you like something you have no understanding of?

I used to play soccer. I just don't like it. What is so hard to understand about soccer?

IMO it's not really about understanding the basics of how the game works, it's about appreciating how they make it look easy.

I understand Baseball but I don't understand all the nuances of it so I don't enjoy following it.

I know how difficuly it is moving a ball down the field in soccer, trapping a pass coming at you at 30 MPH on the run, heading a ball coming across your path etc...

that's what I'm looking at. That's what I understand as a player.

What is soccer?? Are there naked women in it? Its it like canada? Supposedly exists but I've dont believe it
