Am I overtrained?

right now Im on a 5 day routine, lifting 4 days and cardio all 5,I feel great all day and am never really dragging ass,but when it comes time to hit the hay I toss and turn all night and maybe get 3 hours of sleep a night.

Im not really sure of the problem, but I cant go on getting such little sleep as Im sure it will catch up to me

Just an idea, I'm a horrible sleeper myself. I have perscription sleeping pills but I swear this is the best route. Anout an hour before bed take 5HTP, then right before bed take Valerian Root and melatonin(both small doses at first) You should sleep easy.

It's hard to make a call on overtraining being the issue with just that one symptom. It you are still strong in the gym and your lifts aren't deteriorating that's a sign that it might not be. Just too hard to say anything other than 'maybe'.

lifts are going up even though Im cutting, its just been this week sleep has been crap,I have lorazepam here maybe Ill try that tonight

not really, things are pretty easy right now,I work 1-2 days a week,no real money issues, when I lay down I do think but its incoherrant crap that makes no sense

Change your sleep schedule around at all lately? I slept a bit longer into the morning a few days ago and the past few nights I've had trouble getting to bed at my normal time, so I toss and turn.

i had the same shit but i take ambien before i go to bed and usually get 7-8 hours every night and my energy during the day is insane compared to before when i never slept! My bench has gone up about 35 pounds in the last 2 months since i started taking it. all the other sleep aids i've taken made me groggy in the morning but not ambien

How long have you been on the new routine?

I have the same sleep symptoms where my mind just seems to go crazy about nothing too. Perhaps a before bed ritual like 5 mins of meditating (dont laugh) will help. I have been told that because I spend a few hours a day in bed on my laptop, that my mind is associating the bed with work; so try and separate the bed as a sleep only area - if you dont already.

Good luck, poor sleep is worse than most people realise.

Had the same problem, here's what I did:

I started sleeping every night at the same time and got up the next morning at the same time. Also, I gave up napping. It was tough for the first week, but now when I hit the bed, I'm out within 2 minutes.

Eating right before bed can also effect your sleep. May want to wait 30 minutes after eating.

Correct. If you start getting headaches thats almost a sure sign. I got headaches for a week and I never got them. Took a week off and theyve been gone for a while.

But with just not being able to sleep, I'm not sure if thats a symptom or not.

sleep schedule hasnt changed,I goto bed between 1-2 on weekdays and wake around 12-1, my lifting schedule is fairly new, within the last three weeks I stepped it up,but I figured I should be able to sleep easier if anything.

Ill try my lorazepam as its prescribed for sleep aid aswell so that may help, the tylenol simply sleeps dont do jack anymore, Ill also try meditation, thanks guys

i finally just went to my physician and told him i can't fuckin sleep. he said the best thing now is ambien, i think i'm probably addicted though because if i don't have it i can't sleep. but when i'm on it (2 months now), i feel so refreshed the next day to the point where i can be at school for 9 hours and still be focused in the gym after. i love it

i've taken Ambien, and it hasn't done shit for me. i know some people that it has worked for, it they are addicted to it. if they dont have it, they get pretty bad insomnia, so be careful of that.

update,I took a lorazepam, crashed by about 130 but I fricken woke up at 8am,which sucks balls.

I think my sleep pattern is just a clusterfuck, but Im young Ill adjust

One of the reasons that I like to workout in the morning, aside from my schedule, is the fact that if I workout at night, my muscles are too tight and I can't sleep. I do agree with going to bed and getting up the same time every day (if possible). I hit the hay about 9 pm and am up about 3:30 am. On weekends, it's automatic, but not needed. Since I've started working out and set my sleep pattern like this, my wife even said that she noticed that I sleep much better.

Since you don't 'feel' tired during the day it sounds like you might be getting enough sleep... just not as much as you want. Did this become a problem just recently or has it been bothering you for awhile now?

My dad has ambien and ive tried it a few times. I get the worst nightmares with that stuff. I swear its the devil. A good cardio session during the day usually puts me out at night. Also reading a book or mag in bed makes me fall asleep FAST.

Are you stressed?

nope, stress levels are non exhistant,Im actually really relaxed which is odd for me because the last year has been nothing but stress.

I think my sleeping pattern is just screwed, for example,I slept yesterday from like 6-10 woke up for a few hours ate, then crashed again for 10+ hrs

How does wine affect you? I usually get sleepy. On occassion, I'll have a glass of wine about an hour before bedtime....it seems to help.

alcohol has little effect on me unless I drink to get in a buzzed state then I get sleepy, but I dont think that will be to healthy, plus im dieting

My tips:

1. I think musketeer said it above: Make your bed a SLEEP ONLY AREA. This means
no work or anything on it...ok, ok, except for the occasional hanky panky! That
would probably put you to sleep haha.
2. Seriously, lifting earlier in the day would probably help.
3. You're cutting, so a late night meal probably isn't a good idea.
4. If you are a Christian or religous man, you could do some praying or reading of the
Bible. I'm reading "A Purpose Driven Life" at the moment. It relaxes me greatly.

Hope some of these help.
