either that or one of the two in the relationship needs to cheat (or do something else that's fucked up) on the other to create a problem that cannot be fixed so that a break up occurs, but until that time both will go on living and "trying to make it work" simply because they don't want to give up on something (which in the back of their minds they know won't really work anyhow) before something bad happens because then they'll forever look back on the relationship regretting not having given it a chance to mature/take it's course/reach full potential.
