ALA can stand for two different things -

It can stand for Alpha LIPOIC Acid:

Alpha-lipoic acid (lipoic acid) is a universal anti-oxidant: it works in both fatty and watery regions of cells to quench free radicals. It also helps to recycle other antioxidants, including vitamins E and C, Co-Q10, and glutathione, extending their metabolic life. (Packer L, et al. Alpha-lipoic acid as a Biological Antioxidant. Free Radical Biol Med 1995;19(2);227-50)

OR

It can stand for Alpha-LINOLENIC acid:

Alpha-Linolenic acid is an essential fatty acid (Omega-3) highly concentrated in certain plant oils such as flaxseed oil - the body converts ALA to EPA and DHA, the two types of omega-3 fatty acids more readily used by the body.

besides its anti-oxidant attributes it is also said to be a nutrition partitioning agent mimicking the action of insulin when taken together with carbs. it should lower insulin output and drive more nutrients into muscle cells and prevent them from being converted into fat. on a ketogenic diet one could remain in ketosis even whith 100g of carbs ingested when you supplement 1g of ALA together with the carbs.

However, you have to admit that when "Big Geo'ge" made the "Platinum Search" feature, he really f'd up because now people cant really search for things they need to due to the limits. He went wayyyyyyyyy too far when he did that to the search. I mean, I can see the other limits/features, but when he did that, he essentially made the board slower because now people will ask questions that could have been answered, provided they had full access to the search features.

ALA comes in pills or powder. The cheapest sources I've seen:
