Several things may be going on.
First, if you take ALA on an empty stomach, it WILL cause some burning or heartburn for many people. The best way to lessen this is to drink some water, or even better, something a bit more substantial than water (like a protein shake) or even better, a meal of solid food.
Second, what ALA does is it increases insulin sensitivity, so from what I have felt and figured out .... it appears that for many guys that they insulin "spike" does not FEEL as pronounced after a meal .... plus the spike in your blood sugar is lessened because ALA helps to increase the effectiveness of insulin, so that the spike in your blood sugar tends to either be less for a given meal, and or last less time for a given meal.
Now what most people dot realize is that in some ways they are kinda "addicted" that that blood sugar and insulin spike. You know the drill - you eat high Glycemic carbs, .... your blood sugar goes sky high ...... a boat load of insulin gets released, the sugar gets wiped out of the blood stream quickly .... you have a sugar crash .... and NOW you crave MORE carbs.
That’s the sort of sugar addiction cycle.
And it happens to SOME extent with all carbs, but the higher they are on the Glycemic index, the more pronounced this effect (spike, drop, crave, eat, spike, drop, crave, etc) is.
ALA seems to help break this cycle for many. It FEELs to me that the sugar spike never gets AS high (you don’t get as much of a sugar rush) and because of that the insulin spike never FEELs as pronounced, and the crash never FEELs as bad, so therefore, your cravings are less.
I am one of those people that to some degree, my mood tends to shift based on when I ate, where my blood sugar is ...... etc. But since starting to take ALA I have noticed that overall, things appear or feel to be more "evened out" because I think the highs/lows of blood sugar and insulin have been lessened.
Now THAT will have a secondary effect of lessening your appetite, because for many guys, its actually the sugar crash that makes them "feel" hungry.
For some guys that may not be the case, and ALA may have no effect upon appetite. But for some, this effects may be seen.
Hope this all has made sense.
In all honestly (and I am one of the few on these board admit this sort of thing) the above post is based on what *I* sort of understand, I am not a chemist or biologist or Doc. But from what I am learning and from what I have felt - this seems to be what is happening.
If some knowledgeable person (and I mean that, not just someone talking out his ass) if someone really DOES have a better explanation, I would love to hear it. Its all about learning.
Karma?
