The good news is that I've received confirmation of two assignments in Europe in the Spring. The bad news is that I'm having to change my flight arrangments. Delta wants $150 on each change I make, plus additional fare. Does anyone know a way around the penalties? It will literally cost me more to change the tickets than to buy new ones.

Did you pay full fare for either ticket? If you did, then they are refundable, period.

If they are discount tickets, the airlines can impose some pretty shitty fees for adjusting them.

Yes they are discount tickets but offered by Delta itself as an internet special. In order to change, I have to buy off the internet, which raises the fare significantly and they add $150 on top of that. The total change in each ticket is almost $400. I can buy the same tickets, same nonstop flights, off flights.com for $320 each.

My experience is that reps have the ability to charge you or let you off. It seems to be a judgement call. I've had decent luck with changes for some reason. Must be my charming voice.
