African American thought...

I know quite a few people from Africa who can't stand the fact that black people in America are called African American. They, for the most part, don't want to be associated with most of the black people that they meet on a daily basis here on campus.

Today I finally met one girl that I've been working with on the women's tennis team and I just figured that she was British. She is white and she told me today that she is from South Africa. She also went on to say that she would like to get dual-citizenship someday because she liked it here so much (the town that I live in) and would like to be able to stay if she so pleased.

Just got to thinking...she is white but if she was given her dual-citizenship...she would be African American...and white:)

Just a thought...

ha haaa. i know of someone from this board in that situation.

by american blacks you mean the ghetto type right?

wow.....american blacks are hated by african blacks and by american whites.....what a shitty situation.
NeWay.....its not hard to understand the case that african blacks have against "african americans". As somebody living in the continent of africa it would probably piss me off that some rich, well of america asshole was trying to pretend like they are like me, a poor, highly at risk for AIDS, highly at risk for genoicidal killing, tribe member, black person of an african nation. Really american blacks have very little in common with african blacks..........Which is why, hopefully, stupid, shortsighted, racial and ethnic labels will eventually fade away. For example, I'm german-irish and american indian............what the fuck am I supposed to feel about that???? I'm a 1/4 american indian so I guess I identify most with that part......but not really.....I'm just really an upper-middle class white cracker. I'm rambling I think....so my point....yeha, my point....racial, ethnic, nationalistic lables are shortsighted and stupid.........but I guess neccessary for the time being because there are a lot of stupid, shortsighted, ignorant people alive today. ONE WORLD, ONE PEOPLE, ONE LOVE lol

and the american blacks use "african" as a financial tool.

i'm irish/polish.
should i be stupid and growing potatoes

the dis-like that is between Africans and African-American(personally i disagree with this label) is purely based on stereo types and ignorance. I am a Blackman in America and I am friends with many, many Africans from many countries in Africa and we discuss all the time the various steretypes that is mostly created and spreaded by the media and history to keep us divided. It is really a trip

Exactly michaelm..........its to the advantage of every politician to keep americans divided. Theres the black vote, the gay vote, the rich vote, the poor vote, the middle class vote, the christian vote, the woman vote, the soccer mom vote, etc etc etc etc............its much easier for politicians to divide and counquer than to actually do whats right

I've never heard my girlfriend say African American when talking about herself or her family. She just says "black." Hmm I'll ask her about this tomorrow.

My girlfriend doesn't call herself White either...she is Greek. When she fills out a form where you have to put down your race (which she says she ONLY sees in the US) she skips Caucasion and marks 'other' and puts Greek out beside it.

Why can't I just put...American next to mine?

She is too proud of the fact that she is Greek to say otherwise:)

So...the girl I met who is from South Africa...and has white skin...what should she put down? I know...caucasian...but if you think about it...it just doesn't make a lot of sense.

I just wish that I could say that we were all American...instead of black, white, African American, etc...

Who knows...

I was at Applebees tonight and one of the football coaches threw a fit because one of his guests at his table was carded tonight for their ID. They didn't have it, so they would not serve them a beer. They take serving in this small town VERY seriously... The coach got VERY rude and began saying it was because he was black and called everyone in the place racist. TOTALLY changed my opinion of the guy...

He walked up to the manager and called him a racist. The manager should have turned and said..."I'm not racist...I just don't like YOU."

I think most Greeks would not consider themselves "white."

I had a professor in a Race class who was from Italy, and he repeatedly said "I am not white. Please don't call me that."

Bro,....I'm Italian.... Italians are white, "trust me." Your teacher slobber(no offense to you) must have been a friggin' retard. People should be proud of what they are. Italians are of a "European decendant peoples." They are white/ caucasion. Sicilians as well. Sicilians/Italians are the same,...such, Sicily is just set aside, (an island) but still part of Italy. Don't give me any shit, about mixed this, other race that,...what have you w/ Italians/or Sicilians. We are a "caucasion white people of European decent" guys.

Oh,....not to offend anyone black American,...but Sicilians/ Italians are not half black. No matter what "mythical story" you have supposedly heard. Tell this to an Italian,...and be prepared to get your ass kicked in. We don't likey that.

Like saying, the Northern Irish peoples are (called black Irish) are half Spanish because of their black hair, darker features. Fairy tale. even if was possible..... 2 different stories. Unrelated.

Just trying to show comparison.

No matter to me though, what color/ sex preferance a guy is.... If he is cool w/ me..... No problem, he's a bro. But I do think everyone should be a little more proud of their heritage today. Only though to that.... My opinion,...just seems like today it seems, (from not all) politically correct to discriminate on caucasions. When is this race battle shit just going to just end?

Just my opinions guys....
respect all views/not trying to piss off, or start wars.

Thanks

The term "Black Irish" is used with a deprecatory meaning by the Catholic Irish to describe the Protestants of Ireland who have historically supported the British rule. "Black" in this sense connotes the "religious and political bigotry"

African American was just another term conceived to aid the uber-politically correct molly coddling of black people who think the world owes them something, along with coloured, mixed race (although that can apply in other situations), etc.etc. Not many people can say every single one of their ancestors came from the country they now reside in, so every bugger out there would be saying 'Oh, I'm a dutch-french-finnish-american' or something like that. It is the type of phrase just made up to pander to minorites (I don't mean all blacks, just the ones with a chip on their shoulders) who just drag the country down.

heh heh that was my rant for the day.

I think we are confusing NATIONALITY with RACE here. These are two separate concepts.
My nationality = Italian, English, Norwegian
My race = White
I dont particularly like the term caucasian. My black friends who try to be politically correct would refer to whites (in my presence) and caucasian and i tell them how i hate that term. Why are people AFRAID to just say BLACK or WHITE these days??

my greeks dont refer to themselves as white becaues many of them of an olive skin color which is common to that region. i was in S.Africa and now live in the US. My black friends would introduce me to their black friends as their african brother....wierd situation......anyway most greeks, germans, french, etc hate greek-america,french-american,german-american because those that grow up in america throw aside their cultural traditions and do not give a shit about where their family is from....so its not just an issuse with africans.....btw most african-americans know nothing about being african.....i could name my daughter lakesha and it does not maker her african

You're not getting the point. Italians are Italian. "White" doesn't mean shit. Just like black doesn't mean shit. There are so many different ethnicities that comprise each label.

And Italian is still a generalized term. Your racist ass doesn't want to admit to any racial mixing, but it is quite evident all over Italy. It is a FACT (learn some history) that Southern Italians are darker because of racial mixing. Arab as well as African. Areas on the Mediterranean all traded with each other, and intermarried with each other throughout history. Greek, Arab, Egyptian, Spanish, and probably a few more. Rome had many colonies in Northern Africa, such as Carthage. There was racial mixing going on since the days of the Roman Empire. Sicily was a Greek island for quite some time before the Romans had it, and a central hub of trading on the Mediterranean.

I am Italian myself, half of it Northern, half of it Southern. I'm well aware of the descrimination Northern Italians have towards Southern Italians, and it is precisely because of this racial mixing. Many Americans of Southern Italian descent deny any such racial mixing because they do not want to be degraded, you seem to be a prime example of this.

Yes you are right. Unfortunately with the way things are perceived one race can not celebrate their existence the same as another race can.

Be proud.

There are three major genetic groupings of human beings: 1)Mongoloid 2) Caucasoid 3) Negroid. All further subcategories; hispanic, pacific islander are just subdivisions of one of the three groups.

some say a 4th bro....austrailoid (sp)

As to race..there is one race.....the human race...

Some scientists have classified us into nine Geographical Races:

European (Europeans, North American whites, Middle Easterners),

African (Africans, Afro-Americans, Haitians, Jamaicans),

East Indian (Indians, Sri Lankans, Bengals),

Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Phillipinos),
Melanesians (Fiji, New Guinea),

Polynesians (Hawaiians, Samoans),

Micronesians.

Australian Aborigines.

American Indians (Cherokee, Blackfoot, Lumbee, and Eskimos).

The australoid were a branch of the mongoloids from southern asia who migrated to australia. They have been separated from the mongoloids for so long however that they have acquired a very different physical appearance.

I'm glad this is a civilized discussion.. it's nice to talk about things like this without people getting offended or upset. I'm in large part scottish and am very proud of my heritage. However I was born and raised in America and am very proud of that as well. One rhetorical question I've always had is.. why do we need to label the color of a persons' skin when we describe them? "My black friend (or african american)" "That white guy over there" I can't help but chuckle when people tell me a story and feel the need to add the skin color of a person into the description. I guess that goes back to the seperatist ways that were instilled in us from youth. Whatever.. thought I'd add in my rant too.

why do we need to tell the color of the persons skin when we tell a story?

because we ARE telling a story. thats what story telling is. we are trying to paint a picture in the persons head.
is it absolutely necessary? no, but it helps the story or helps describe the situation.

I tend not to mention race when talking about someone unless I need to physically describe them. Then it is somewhat necessary.

I do sometimes like to use race to describe a group of people. For instance when I'm criticizing the bleeding heart liberals on campus, I'll say "priviledged white kids." Of course they're not all white, but by and large they are. I'm white, but didn't come from a tame suburban background, and I think it's funny that these people think they can speak for their minority brothers without ever experiencing their plight.

so when I say "so there was this black guy wearing a hat" you can get a perfect mental image of the guy I'm talking about? That's amazing!

On a side note.. why would this get locked if there aren't any flames present.... yet.

Nefi and I hope to be married within the year and I plan to move there. We will have homes in both Cyprus as well as the US and would like to spend 6 months in each.

I did talk to her about this tonight...and she said that she was NOT white or caucasion...she was Greek.

Also wanted to add that I appreciate everyone's help in keeping this thread level-headed.

Most people who know me know that I am not a racist at all. My girlfriend isn't white and most people with my last name aren't white either...lol.

I just really like hearing from other people and their perspectives on things. I've learned quite a lot from this thread.

B fold....I take it that you have begun settling issues with her parents....have you ever been to Cyprus? I dont know many people who can manage to live in Cyprus that are not Greek and have not lived there before.....I know many Cypriots who left Cyprus for school and when they went back, they could take staying there. But in my opinion, its like paradise there....amazing and hopefully I will be there one day.....Good luck with Nefi and I hope you settle any issues with her parents

Not to be a smart ass, but American is your citizenship, not your race.

And the girl from South Africa...well, she could be South African-American!

There are 2 parts to it...your nationality and citizenship. I'm Hawaiian/Chinese/Caucasian...but I'm an American citizen too!
