Advise for older guy

Old_Dog

I am in my late forties and started working out six months ago.
I am doing OK but am confused about how should I modify my workout according to my age.
Any advise from not so young (or young) guys?
Would highly appreciate it.

My advICE would be to go for it mate and dont let your age be a mental barrier to your workouts. Things like taking care of your joints by avoiding certain exercises like doing things "behind the neck" and really taking your time to warm up and (stretch) cool down. I'm 26 and have been training for over 12 years, and my body feels different than when I was younger and I know that I have to be a little bit more careful; it must be even more so for a guy pushing 50, however, some of the strongest dudes in my gym are older wiser ones.

All I'm really saying is look after yourself more than the younger guys, but dont set your sights any lower, you CAN do it mate!

Thanks man,
You are on the mark when it comes to warm ups.
I have noticed that if I do more warm ups, I can always do more work out.

I'm 44 years old and I don't modify my routine because of age. My goals are probably different from the 20 somethings, but I find that I can do the same routines with a few minor adjustments to fit my body and goals. The most important piece of advice to young and older lifters is be open minded. No matter how long you have been lifting, there is always something new that you can learn.

most guys will train somewhat in their 20's and then that'll be it. glad to hear you are starting.

I'm 47 and I'm stronger now than I've ever been before. I got back into lifting about two years ago after too many years of not lifting and a chronic back problem. It's a PITA getting older but I don't think I work out any differently from twenty years ago except that I stop at the first sign of an unpleasant twinge whereas when younger I might have tried to work through it. It takes longer now for injuries to heal so they are worth avoiding.

I'd recommend getting a long-term program in place rather than just blasting away at a routine from workout to workout. The madcow 5x5 thread is worth a read. The principles behind it have been an eye-opener and you might even take a run-through of the program itself. A lot of the links in the thread are worth following for even more reading material.
