advice... should I or shouldn't I?

So... Its been quite some time since I've recieve a performance evaluation. Its normally yearly.. and my last one was pretty damn good but I didn't get an anual raise.

Its a touch and go situation... so to speak. When I do get a raise its a pretty good one, but its been so long since I've gotten one... not sure if its due to my performance (which... my evaluation shows i am up to par) or if its just upper mang trying to keep overhead cost down to get a bigger % of profit.

I turned down a few jobs this past year, mostly due to my not wanting to relocate, and also just really being comfortable where I am. However, I also need to be compensated for my extra work, and dedication to this job. I am not the kind of person to go and demand a raise... or even ask for one... I just feel that management should be ontop of that.

I have in the past talked to my boss about this issue... and was told to send him an email when my evaluation was due because he is always so busy and that would be a reminder. I have sent two emails, and have been very patient... keep in mind... I have only asked for another evaluation, not a thing about a raise. I'm still yet to get a reply on that.

I know i've been busting my ass lately... late hours, in here and there on weekends. Busting my ass to meet deadlines. I have to take an ocassional day off which i use vacation or sick time, but its all medical and I have excuses. And when I do, I make up for it by coming in early, working late... or working a few hours on the weekend.

So, with the rise in the cost of living... the fact that due to some issues in my life... I may have to put my kids in private school. I'm weighing out a few options now, but I in order to keep them in the same district, I just don't see a way around it. (long issue) ... I can't see me being able to afford it on my current salary... and a raise is long overdue... and if not a raise... at least tell me why? Our company is booming... so i couldn't see that being an issue.

I currently just feel like my boss/engineer... being human and getting a quartely commison based on profit will of course try to keep his overhead as low as possible. I mean, can you blame him.

So now i am faced with the issue of going in and demanding a evaluation and then a raise if it comes back to par... or just sitting back and waiting ( which i have done for so long)

I am really getting frustrated! I want to be here for the people... my coworkers, and enjoying what I do... but compensation for my work also would be highly appreciated.

forget the eval, just ask for the raise...best to have some offers on the table for leverage though...or maybe mention the offers you've had. go in with some ammo is what I'm sayin.

Go tell bossman to pay up watch you go as the oilfield is a booming place that needs chics like you.

Better yet - tell him if he is too busy to do your evalutation to just send you a blank signed form and you will fill it in yourself.

hahaha

Hell yeah

Just do what I do......do a half-assed job until they pay you what you think you are worth.

Jesus, you got a good review last year and NO raise? WTF? What was the reason for the no hike in pay then?

I think it's fair for you to GO INTO his/her/ office and ask for your yearly review.Christ, if they respect you as a employee in the least bit, they can at least give you five minutes of their fricken time.

I hate people who can't stand confrontation, cuz it sounds like they are avoiding you for some reason.

Bring it up.

Be polite and professional.

Ask for raise, and be straight forward.

If you get it, great. If not then deal with it or you can know how you will be treated at that company for the rest of your time. You can start looking elsewhere.

They aren't going to fire you for asking for a raise, so you have nothing to lose.

so here is the last eval... in a nut shell!

I scored a 5 or 4 in every field unless I was clearly held back from doing my job due to other obligations at the office. I wasn't allowed much field work due to me having to be in the office to do certain duties. I only scored one 3 which would be average (on the scale) and that was in Administrative ability... and the exact words are

"As previously noted N's work remains solitary. However, she isolated in her office and depends on others, particulary shop personnnel for direct feedback on drawing issues. Confirming obscured or unclear dimensions and such with others is not a problem. The limited time she spends in these situations is being handled fine."
"As previously noted only a minimal amount of planning functions are under N's control. She performs tasks as requested in the order requested."
(not sure why i was given a 3 when this issues is far beyond my control)

I've only had one other eval that came back with one 3 grade, and that was my issues with another employee and his wanting to rule the roost (so to speak, and this was combined with my harassment issues... ) I soon got over it and all was good. I've never recieved an eval that said I didn't perform the job given to me to the best of my ability. I've been given on more than one eval a '5' saying...

"N's knowledge of the processes we use in the office to document our projects is excellent. Her ability to learn new computer techniques and software packages as they become necessary is very good as well "

I have no idea why I haven't recieved a raise... besides my lack of directly asking. I've asked for eval's... but just don't feel I should have to ask for a raise.

I agree...

I was all ready to go a bit ago... past eval's in hand... and low and behold he's off in some other direction. Not sure if he will be in the office this evening or not.

I am not at all squemish with my boss... I have a really honest boss to employee relationship with him. I've voiced opinions many of times and we sometimes have to agree to disagree. But still... I say what I have to say, but say it with grace and class. ( I know... can you imagine that... LOL )

I however have not one time in the last 7 years asked for or demanded a raise. I've brought up my eval a few times and soon after a raise came... and then sometimes not even though the eval came back great.

I know he has alot on his hands... but only enough rope is given... I have been very relaxed... but I am starting to get irritated. I really want to be here, for many reasons. I just feel like I am being taken advantage of right now.

You need to step up and firmly request your performance evaluation and be prepared to discuss how you have contributed to the firm and demand your raise. He will respect you more for it. Trust me. Sounds like he is just trying to get away with being cheap if you are not going to demand a raise.

I guess I have to just get over the whole... worth it then you get it shizzle.

I know I will go above and beyond for this company... I've done just about everything to help them push forward. I've self taught ... data entry, network issues, and basically any other thing they need done even out of my field.

I was hired exclusively for drafting and design... however, I do whatever is asked of me... and have learned each and every thing on my own.

I am past the whole... I am to busy, shizzle... and if my performance isn't up to par... tell me and then lets talk about what I can do to make it better. I however don't believe that is the case at all! Its more of a profit issue right now... and already I am way below standard income range.

Boo, seems to me like you are going to have to insist on a raise.

why can't i be the a bitch when it comes to this? I guess its more of a, I have a job to provide for my family... I am anal about security... beit not what I should be making but still... security.. and I just don't like chances when it comes down to the line of feeding and housing my children. I am making due... but its just that, making due. I am sure my making due is different than others.. beings I have to have a few thousand tucked away for emergency... but if thats not there and I have to take from my stash... I am in panic mode.

I just want the best for my family. I am struggling as a single parent to get there... and its just really weird for some to see it, beings how fortunate my family is... I don't ever request anything nor do I pursue issues I should. What I have and what I don't have are all on my own.

I need to really do quite a few things, not for me... but for my kids.

Lady, by reading what you JUST typed:Hon, YOU should have gotten some sort of raise. SOMETHING!ANYTHING! Jesus.

I have no idea what your situation is ON having "funds" tucked away . I know you have kids, unsure if you are married, but I'd be looking for another job IF AT ALL POSSIBLE!

I've read your posts. You are above average in the "smarts" department. Hire a head hunter to find you another job..AND FAST.

I recall a time loooong ago when I worked for a major audit firm. My boss told me NOT to tell anyone what kinda raise I recieved that year. My response to him, " Don't worry, I'm as embarrassed about it as you are". I got fired and went out on my own. Screw that noise. Once, again, I had support though. Makes a huge difference when you have something/someone to fall back on.

 Head up....Resume updated,babe!

May I make an observatio?

From what I have read I get the impression that you somehow feel that asking/demanding a raise is a negative thing. <---- I believe that therein lies your issue.

Just think about it.

I really want to say thank you...

I have been here for 7 years and have built my skills up on my own... taking into my own hands to learn the ins and outs of every aspect of this business. I've done from accounting to designing. We started small... and now are just growing and growing. I am still called upon for networking issues... or program issues. I do just about anything when it comes down the line... I work for my family.. and so the sky is the limit.

I turned down a few jobs... some where I was clearly going to be taken advantage of also... and thanks to some insight I realized that. Of course I want a raise, more money... but clearly that isn't everthing. I have a loyalty to this company and I really want to stay here. I have learned so much here, and hope to learn more.

I am just not a persistant person when it comes to things like this. I just feel, when indeed I am warrented a raise... I will get one. But after 3 years of busting my ass... It lowers my self worth... even though, I do just as much now and sometimes more than before.

BM... yes... you are correct. I just feel that if I am worthy, then I shouldn't have to ask. I would prefer to be appreciated and rewarded for all that I have done. I just feel like I have to higlight everything now, and that to me is self gloating.

Ask for a raise straight out, stop beating around the bushes...if he says no, you need to exercise your options.

Some bosses would beg you to stay and some would be like see ya
but Im sure he values you as an employee and doesnt want to lose you
go in with guns blazing, not with an attitude, just say listen, i think i deserve that raise that i havent gotten in ages and if you dont think i do, then please tell me why

I think this is some really solid advice.

it sounds like all your waiting isn't really panning out for ya unfortunately. =(

I'd say you need to be proactive instead of reactive in this situation because it seems to really concern you, which it should!

If you use that last line you'll get your raise or your answers (hopefully) but a conversation about something like this can't hurt, your boss doesn't know what is bothering you until you tell him.

also you sound to really love this company so you should have a pretty good relationship with your boss.

trust me, if you're being bothered by this, HE WANTS TO KNOW, he doesn't want you going around job hunting he wants to know when his employees are bothered so that he can fix it. =)

Edit: Also the best way to approach this conversation would probably be to talk to your boss and say that something is troubling you or bothering you and that you'd like to talk with him, I'm sure he'd be open for that.

I agree...

I have never been that pushy of a person when it comes down to things like this. I really need to get out of the 'accept' state of mind and more into the 'demand' state of mind. Its not like i've not had plenty of offers on the table, and declined them all. I do love my job... its frustrating sometimes, but for the most part I couldn't ask for better people to work for and work with. I also know there is security in this job, and as a single mom with 2 kids I need security. I know that they see my worth even though they don't compensate me for it.

My boss and I do have a good relationship, I've been with him since the beginning of this new fabrication shop. I was one of his first employee's and I have stuck with him thru thick and thin. Its really weird though... I can and have sat in his office and told him alot of life issues that were personal but cant seem to go and ask for a raise. I never have asked for a raise in the last 7 years i've been here. I just find it more rewarding when its given with out being asked for. Weird... I know!

I am however getting overly frustrated with this issue and really need to address it before I begin to really hate even coming into work.

Thanks Guys and Gals!

Good luck too! I'm sure you'll be professional and well spoken in said meeting!

Didn't read the whole thread but here is the reality.
Find out what the CPI increase in your area is.
If your salary does not increase by that much each year you are actually getting a demotion money wise!

I have an idea

Send your boss an e-mail thanking him for the generous raise that you received and tell him that its been a long time coming and that you don't deserve such a large increase. ;) See what he says then. hahaha

You need to scrap that mentality in my opinion, don't feel like you're going into to ASK for a raise.

there is a problem here and it needs to be solved, you have questions that need answers, approach it like you're going to get the answers you need.

your boss would probably feel troubled himself to know this is bothering you so much, but he doesn't.

he might have just forgot, I know that sounds horrible but he's a human too.

just go have a talk with him and tell him about your situation.

saying you think you deserve a raise and that you think you should have got one because it's due, and if he doesn't agree then why.

you get answers, and you're not really "asking" for a raise, you've been with him for seven years, I'm sure he doesn't want to lose you, or to make you feel like you're not appreciated.

i can't bear to read any more, but i'm wondering when you got your last raise?

seems like that you've been rather unassuming and modest, and that you're too understanding of your boss's/company's perspective. quite frankly, fuck 'em. in an ideal world, you wouldn't have to state your case and push for what you want/need. but here, you have to go out and get yours.

keep in mind that i'd probably sit around and do nothing. but i'm lazy and more concerned with this huge hole in the universe into which all love, happiness, and meaning are being sucked. never to return.

I would prefer to have some privacy when it comes to things of this nature. This office echo's like crazy, and even with doors closed everyone upstairs can hear the convo going on in his office. I am hoping that he will be here a later this evening or I can catch him when the others are away from their desk. I have a few things to discuss and just don't want it to be all in the public... ya know.

oh yeah definately agree, this is not a conversation anyone would be comfortable having if people could overhear it.

privacy is definately key to such a touchy situation.
