How often do temp jobs actually turn into something permanent, in your experience? I got a call today from a HR person at a company located about almost 2 hours away. She said she had gotten my number from my college's career center. Here's the problem. They are looking for an intern to help them for 2 or 3 months with press releases. I see no point in moving for a temp job when I could be out of work in 2-3 months. And that's a hell of a commute. Here's the final kicker. I've got a job interview Monday that is not a sure thing, but it's something I really want. But that's a week away, and like I said, it's no sure thing. Any advice?

If they arent promising fulltime, then moving would not be worth your time....have u tried negotiating for them to pay for your move?

Actually, I just got the voicemail about 45 minutes ago, so I haven't even called her back yet. I think I am going to e-mail her my resume since she asked for it. After that, I will see what happens. I think my main drawback with it is that I don't want this job. lol. I want the one that I'm interviewing for in a week. Life just gets more complicated.

wow honey I think it really depends entirely on the field and the market. My mom worked temp for years before she caught an assignment that led to being hired.

True. The company wants me to work in the HR department writing press releases. The interview in a week wants to hire me as the copy editor of the paper. I know which one I would be happier at, and I'm prepared to move for the latter. But nothing is a done deal, you know?

I have heard of temps becoming fulltime, but I have NOT seen it personally. If there are too many good reasons NOT TO do it, then don't. However, if you need cashflow then do the temp thing and keep looking for full time employment - always look out for NUMBER 1.

just ask them straight out.

If this other job possibility wasn't looming right there, I would probably jump at this one, despite all the cons. But I'm scared shitless over the other one, just because it's something I really want. lol. I even went out and bought a new suit yesterday for the interview. :)

As I said - take this job for the cashflow and if you get the other, just say, "I got a fulltime job. Thanks for the job." They will have another temp no problem.

Always, always take care of you FIRST.

I e-mailed her my resume and asked her a few questions about the position. I also informed her that I do have another interview in a week. We'll see what happens.

What's funny is that I have been sending out resumes to all these different places, yet the two that show interest in me never received one of those resumes. They had simply been told about me and called me first. Kinda nice.

I'm not a big fan of temp. jobs. A lot of companies will string people along with promises, and never come through. :(

I would like to wish you luck on your interview. ;)

Thanks, this is the first real mention of it that I have made on EF. I wouldn't even tell Shadow the other day, lol. I'm nervous and there is an entire army of butterflies doing the Samba in my stomach, but I'm trying to be optimistic. They are paying my mileage down there which is a nice touch. :)

If it's with a Knight Ridder paper, deny all knowledge of me. :worried:

Trust me, you don't want to know. :verygood:
I'm fairly sure they are not part of the Knight Ridder family. And yep, I'm pretty sure I want to know.....

Look to claim the moving expenses AND job searching/mileage etc. at tax filing time. That will help.

I would 100% wait a week for that other job. Not even think twice because you WILL ALWAYS second guess.

Hope you get it. good luck

I was innocent of all charges. Well, except for the part about the woman in the back miniskirt.

:p

I've been psyching myself up to move, just in case. The other one is about three hours from me, just outside of Knoxville. I love the location and I love the position, so we'll see.

I hope you Monday interview goes well it would be a royal pain to travel 2 hours for a job that is only temp. Word on being up front to the temp people they should understand like Werd said take care of #1. :)

Actually, the trip down there won't be so bad. I have someone that volunteered to drive me, so I'll meet up with him and then head down that way. I think he knows I am nervous so he's hoping to make me feel better.

And as far as the temp job goes, it was offered to me today, but I'm going to turn it down. There's no possibility of it becoming anything permanent. I'd simply be replacing one of their HR people who is on surgery leave. She did tell me though that I was more than welcome to interview for other jobs while working there. I've not called the woman back yet though just because I am trying to figure out if this is a smart move on my part. It seems pretty fruitless to me to move for a job I won't have in 3 months.

There's no need to move for a temp. job, because after your interview you will have a permanent job. :)

I know these things. :alien:

And if the people interviewing you don't know that, we'll just have to send Bubba to explain it to them. :verygood:
