Does anyone on this board take, or have there kids taking medication for ADHD /ADD?

If so...can you tell me the name of the medication and how it works with your body or your kids.

I have some decision to make as to put my Daughter on a new Medication or to keep her off.

Thanks!!! :)

hey...I work in mental health, i'll pm you to get more infor about the medication. there are several out there. some are pretty good, some have some side effects and so on...i'll be with you shortly.

CG, it's like religion - there's passionate supporters and detractors on both sides.

Alot of the negative stuff you read on ritalin etc is really just a side-effect of over/misdiagnosis of ADHD. In the old days lots of kids who would just be called spirited are now labeled and medicated just to make the teachers life easier lol.

but when its really ADHD the effects are magical. In some adults with ADHD, when they start Ritalin therapy they describe it as "it was like someone turned on a light" .

If you google ritalin or adhd keep in mind the "religion" aspect to the debate and dont let them scare you away after you've done your research.

good luck :)

There are several medications used for add/adhd now...adderall, concerta, effexor, strattera, namenda....and the list goes on and on. many depression medications are being used to treat add/adhd. seems there is a lot of playing around with medications in psychiatry right now. just think, there was once a time when Depakote was used to treat seizures, now it is one of the most popular medications in treating bipolar disorder. once they figure out one use for the med, they start testing it for other things and find it has many more uses.

Very true!

I hate the fact that I am the one that makes the choice to put her on it. I mean SHIT it is not my body.

are you sure it's ADHD and not 5 year olds being 5 year olds?

how many of our parents needed to be on psychtrophic drugs to behave?

She is 8 and has always been this way. I told myself that I would not put her on medication until it was effecting her school work. This is her second year in first grade. I had her tested and she is not special ED. She does however, meet the critera for a classification as physically Impaired due to her ADHD medical diagnosis

give them to me.

jk - everything needs to be 'medicated' anymore, push from pharmecuticals on doctors etc.

I agree with poink.

My son has ADHD. He'll be 8 next week. He just started on meds in February. We started with Concerta, 18mg extended release. His attention and focus sky rocketed which allowed him to go up several reading levels in sch0ol and also he was better able to control his impulses. However, as he would be coming off the medication in the evenings, he had increased irritability and he became very easily upset. I eventually had to take him off of that particular medication because it became very bad for him but that does not mean it would have the same effect on your child. My son may also be suffering from some sort of mood disorder but we are unsure at this time. He was recently switched to a straight amphetamine (dexedrine) the very lowest dose of 5mg per day (testing his tolerance for the drug) and so far, he has not had to increased irritability but it has only been less than one week so we are monitoring him closely.

I have some good links about ADHD and medication.

i agree with what the guys are saying as well. in my field i see a lot of really crappy parents who don't want to be parents and the kids run wild. i am sure this is not the case with you. i have also seen, however, the exact opposite. very good parents trying to do everything they can but nothing seems to work. case in point, i had to hospitalize a 9 yr. old little girl because she has the "urges" to put things around her neck (jump ropes, tight necklass,) she is even drawing pictures in school of people shooting themselves in the head and hanging themselves. a lot of it has to do with poor parenting, but there are those out there that are born with chemical inbalances and things get all out of whack. really sad to see

Your son sound just like my Daughter. She was on Concerta for about a year and a half. She was statarted out on 18 mg and after time it was not working so the bumped her up tp 27mg and then stopped working.

She was easily upset as well.

you see I think that little girls parents exposed her to to many things! like scary movies

I know of a guy on here who is going through the same thing with his boy. He doesn't hang out very often, so I'll give him the link to this. Probably be a day or 2.
