ADD/ADHD = feminist BS?

ADD and ADHD is only prevalent in the US and Ritalin is almost only used in this country... which already question the legitimity of those "disorders"

ADD/ADHD is in a large extent a boys dosorders and Ritalin is given to those boys who just show some "active behavior" like anyone who has a lil' bit of Testosterone

So, obviously, this is an evil attempt by feminists to castrate those boys and create, 10 years later, a generation of gays and metrosexuals

I wouldn't go so far as to say it is all bullshit. I would agree though that it is overprescribed to calm normal boys down so that adults don't have to deal with them.

I don't think it is intentional to keep boys down, but I do think it is overdiagnosed to calm boys down. I think we are really harming boys in this country by prescribing drugs for behaviors that are typical for males that age. I think the prescribing peeps mean well, but have gotten it wrong.

hey, great evidence lol

I was joking about the "feminist BS"

But I'm curious to see the long term effects of the overprescription of drugs whether it is SSRI for depression, antibiotics or ADD/ADHD drugs

Children who get used to pop a shitload of pills will probably continue to do so later on

agreed!

Plus, being labelled as having a "disorder" has a negative impact on people long term, IMO

So that's your hypothesis? I think youre on to something. Id be interested in seeing results of a longitudinal study myself. Im sure there will be many lol

I believe its more of a "Father Deficit Syndrome" as most boys on it dont have a dad at home, or have one that is useless and doesnt spend anytime with them. My son was diagnosed with it after the break up, and when ever he came to stay with me shouwed no hyperactivity, but the day he got home he was amped.

It could be that doctors find the easiest way to fix the problem, by drugging them, when the parents have a degree of cause in it.

Just a thought.

They are overprescribing these drugs.

Fortunately for them the victims are male so no one can claim discrimination.

I'm hesitant to agree, having no children of my own by which to judge. But anecdotally I have found that young boys generally respond more obediently (with less fuss) to a male figure than a female one.

That is definately true.

Part of a man's job is to teach his son(s) how and when to behave and when to be a bear with furnature. Men have to have both elements.

If parents would PARENT none of these children would need drugs. (Not that ANYONE NEEDS these fucking drugs. )

Having said that... imagine finding out that your ex (who took your children from you) put your 12 1/2 yr old on anti-depressants because she was depressed?

I THINK FUCKING NOT.

America - pull your fucking heads out of your assholes and give a shit about your children and your parents.

Here is what I found first hand, Teachers are the first to diagnose or attempt to the ADD/ADHD garbage and are told to look for this as it shows its head usually in 3rd grade. So all your 3rd grade teachers see any kid remotely excited in class or boys being boys and call a conference to discuss the issue and stupid parents allow these grade school shrinks to label their kids. Now take a lazy, fat ass teacher in it for a paycheck that wants a bunch of mold in the seats so he/she doesn't have to teach and you get a bunch of boys labeled or potential ADD/ADHD kids.

Trust me, if your kid has it you would be glad to find and answer for the issue to help them concentrate etc., but don't allow your kids grade school lazy ass teacher to try and label your kid when he is just a boy being a boy. The schools can't wait to jump on this one.

This is the closest to total accuracy of any of the posts on this thread. It's usually educaters with absolutely no business diagnosing anything that label the kids first.

The premise that it's exlusively, or even overwhelmingly, boys diagnosed with ADHD is false. For two years I was a clerk in a practice of psychatrists and psychologists that provided a host of services to child and adolescent clients. From my personal experience it seems to be about 60/40 boys to girls. Girls get the primarily inattentive dx and boys the hyperactivity dx.

And I agree it's mostly bullshit.

you gotta admit that adderall is some pretty fucken cool stuff though.

Now this is one I could go on and on about ... but here's my take and it's from first hand experience:

1. Our education system (be it public, parochial or private), and by education system I literally mean the delivery system whereby the information is relayed to the students, in short, is fucked up (and I'm not debating the whys or wherefores, this is just one parents opinion). It's a cookie cutter system and that cookie cutter effectively excludes a certain percentage of children. The "standard" way our kids are taught is NOT effective for X-Y-Z percentage of kids, but the teachers teach the only way they know how to learn themselves. Also, there are only so many resources.

I also believe that there is a factor a lot of people kind of overlook. Most teachers in early education are women and frankly, unless a woman has ACTUALLY RAISED boys, they don't understand the differences in the way the male brain (your basic normal, rowdy physically going boy) operates versus a female brain (generally more verbal at an earlier age).

2. MOST humans are a bit "ADD/ADHD" it's the reason we're ALIVE, as a species. The focusing on the little details, every little sound and movement catching your attention. Until quite recently, in terms of history/evolution, we were PREY animals. Being hypervigilent is an instinctive survival skill.

3. Diet bears a LOT of the blame. Sugar, processed foods, artificial sweeteners ... shit, shit and more shit and a lot of kids turn into human pinballs because their parents don't know about food/don't have the time to prepare decent food/don't have the money to BUY decent food.

4. Our culture ... too many kids sitting on their asses for too long. Gym class is a joke, and kids don't go outside and play anymore, they stay home and push buttons. Kids have bodies that need to be MOVED, muscles and bones that are growing, neural systems that need testing and training.

5. This actually references back to point #2 ... some kids do GENUINELY need the meds because they were born with underactive frontal lobes (great for hunter gatherers, lousy for sitting still in a classroom situation). It genuinely pisses me off because there are kids who REALLY do need the meds to function in a school society, shit, to function at home, and their parents are labeled as schmucks because they put the kids on the meds. Until you've seen the frustration of a child who can't concentrate for ten seconds on something, and you know the kid has a good diet, gets out, runs around, is inherently intelligent but is STILL constantly in trouble at school because their brains operate differently and they are fidgety and disruptive say what you will. Until you've known a child who can't concentrate enough to look you in the eye when you talk to them and then the first time, in their LIVES they are actually focusing and listening to you because of a stupid pill, and then to be told you're a bad parent?!

It frustrates me when everything is whitewashed ... I think the meds are overprescribed, but the meds have real value for people who really need them when all other recourse has been eliminated.

I agree with you on everything.

ESPECIALLY #5. I'm living this right now. I know how true it is.

One more things: it is the drug companies who make parents/teachers believe than it is a desease/disorder

Just like they make people think sadness/blues is a desease that needs a chemical treatment

The problem is that school is an unnatural situation for kids, especially boys.

Dont liken it to serious depression. MDD is a legitimate organic disease who's effects can be visualized via medical imaging. Just now I cannot recall if it's an MRI or a CT scan that can show the changes in the hippocampus of someone with major depression, but MDD is real.

ahhhhh 3rd grade, happend to my boy. I can write a book about this subject.
but long story short, the over worked teacher with a student ratio of 31 to 1 used it to gain control over her class. Mine was not the only boy. I took matters into my own hands and demanded he get an additional recess each day, which worked wonders. how do they expect kids to sit and pay attention for hours on end??? they need to exercise, two 20 minute recesses dont cut it. They are too focused on their standardized test scores that they cut recesses, music, PE, art... all the fun stuff. So the problem was solved with exercise... he alread has an excellent diet w/ added minerals, which is something they are saying these boys lack.. There was no way in hell I will ever medicate my kids. really pisses me off
