Acid Reflux Disease

I was given a perscription.....but I have been taking enzymes and that seems to work just as well

I've used Zantac, Losec and Prevacid. Zantac does nothing for me, but Losec and Prevacid (both I believe work on the same mechanism, different from Zantac) both work very well for me. However, if I am very good with my diet, I don't need to take it.

I eat a lot of pasta, rice, and mixed veggies now. I drink caffiene free diet soda. I have been drinking a lot of water lately too. Sometimes it's hard to pass up Italian food. I'm Italian and it's hard to say no to anything tomato based. That is like telling a diabetic they can't have their insulin.

Drop the soda and you will proly notice a HUGE improvement. At least don't have any with any tomato products or within 8 hrs of bedtime.

I used to have it real bad (woke up choking on vomit almost every night)... dropped the soda and no more problems. :)

Doesn't matter what soda you drink... they are all bad news (I think the carbonation plays a role).

Also avoid OJ less than 8 hours before bed.

I get acid reflux disease, however the acid is not affecting my tummy in anyways - my stools are healthy and regular, no unusual excess bloatedness, however I get the acid heat from the stomach to my throat and tonsils. It seems like it's always hot, heated and easily irritated. I feel much heat coming out and I suspect this is also another aspect of acid reflux disease.

Can anyone help me?

I am trying Miracid now..

I took aciphex (sp) but I also took this stuff at the health food store called gastro and it worked great. I get heartburn sometimes but the I get a really bad pain in stomach...at the bottom of my rib cage...This takes it right away!

I've had acid reflux since I was 16. An upper GI showed a swollen esophagus so the doc put me on Prilosec. Every time I would see the doc he would just tell me to lower the dose if everything was going well so that's what I've been doing on my own. Now I'm on Nexium, but take it EOD. I haven't had any problems for years, even with the same diet.

Actually, eversince I've been taking a teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate powder on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, it has promoted the state of my stomach into alkaline-like much more, hence less acid.

Stay away from anything tomato sauce based (e.g. Salsa, spaghetti sauce and ketchup) this will do wonders.

Yes it is, it was not recommended by a gastrointestinal specialist simply because I didn't asked (coz I knew he'd probably want me to take some unnecessary prescriptive medications instead).
A very knowledable individual told me this and it has worked on me.

Try it bro. Remember to go for 100% baking soda (unmixed with corn flour/ starch etc like some of them). 1 teaspoon mixed with half a glass of water followed by a glass of water to flush it down on an empty stomach.

I have to check the name of my priscription when I get home. It works but it is expensive as all hell $80 a month. Thank god for insurance.

my insurance doesn't cover nexium, and i can't afford it, so nothing for me, i just kind of learn to deal with it, really sucsk sometimes though

Be careful with how you deal with the GERD, don't take it lightly. This can progress over time to develop into a pre-cancerous condition called Barrett's Esophagus. This is a change in the lining of the esophagus[ actually a change in the cell type that line the esoph - a metaplasia] and this is the step before the change to a more agressive Esophageal CA.
Make the changes you need to make to control this condition, the diet is a hard thing to have to reign in, but do it.
At this point you have an easily reversible condition.
Hope I helped.
